One thing is for sure, they better not wait until "late summer" so they can bundle Mountain Lion with it like they did with the 2011s.

What better way to promote ML than with the MBA like they introduce Lion with the new MBA.

Decided today I am going to wait until the new refresh of either the MBP or MBA, the MBP depending on if the 13" gets a slimmer design, SSD and retina display as standard...which lets face it, is very very unlikely, so I'll probably be getting the new MacBook Air.

Going to be a long wait as I really want one now, but I know if I got it now and when it comes to around late April - July and the new refresh is released I will be kicking myself for not being able to wait, plus I don't really need the portability of the Air until I start university in September; if I get it now it would just be an expensive desktop when I already have an iMac. Not really bothered about ivy bridge, just want retina display, would be gutted if they don't include it!

For selfish reasons I would love it if the MBA was released around April/May, can't see it happening though, as covered above, it is perfect for Apple to release the MBA with Mountain Lion preinstalled, akin to the 2011 model with Lion.

I fully agree with this, and am also expecting the announcement of the new MBA range to synchronized with the availability of Mountain Lion, as has just happened with iOS 5.1 and the new iPad. Not only does it make for a more impressive keynote, but the timing feels right, both with respect to the availability of the Ivy Bridge platform and with respect to the timing of the previous model refresh. Ivy Bridge will be available before Mountain Lion, of course, but Apple will probably need an additional couple of months to integrate the new platform. In theory, they could rush and get the products out of the door before then, but what's the point? Apple are not under the same time pressure as the big Asian motherboard manufacturers like ASUS, which need to have their products available in the stores on day one of the Ivy Bridge release.

http://semiaccurate.com/2012/03/13/intels-non-delay-of-ivy-bridge-explained/

"there was a recent flap about Intel delaying Ivy Bridge chips by a quarter. As it turns out, those rumors were a bit premature....Ivy’s launch was delayed because Intel changed production plans at the last minute to put in a different mix of SKUs.

large parts of the Ivy die are taken up by the GPU, and there are two flavors, the 6-shader GT1 and the 16-shader GT2. Everything else being equal, a GT2 takes up notably more die area than a GT1.

If a large enough customer decides to change their orders from LV or ULV GT1s to GT2s, Intel is not going to say no to the extra revenue. And that is exactly what happened. At least one big order was moved from ULV GT1s to GT2s, and Intel could not produce enough by the launch day, so that day was moved out for all. Any guesses as to what OEM uses lots of ULV chips, has an interest in graphics that don’t suck as much, and has a lot of sway at Intel?"

Interesting! Thanks for the info.

When the time comes, do you think I should sell my 2010 MBA 13" and buy the 2012 one?
I love my MBA a lot but I think I need something more than Core 2 Duo, let alone no FireWire ports. :(

What do you lads usually do? and how much can I sell it for, considering it's a 2-yo model?

For iPhones, the resale value seems very high, but for macs, I'm not sure as the market is not as big.

I really don't mind the wait if Apple puts the new Mountain Lion in the new MBA. I don't want to buy a new MBA and then pay to upgrade for Mountain Lion...

And most of all, Lion sucks right now (coming from Snow Leopard). Hopefully ML will ease a lot of the Lion headaches.

What Lion headaches? We have 9 Macs (various models) in our business and all run Lion - I see nothing but improvements over SL. I am not on this forum much, so I apologize if I am ignorant of these "Lion headaches".

I get the sense that most of these people with supposed Lion issues don't actually own Lion.

I would get the 2012 MBP or wait for the 2013 Air, because Haswell will be a big jump in performance over IvyB.

If you think that way, you will never buy a new MBA. If you need it now, but it now and be done with it. I did the same stupid thing with my Mac Mini and waited 2 years. Was it worth the wait? No.

Classy reply .

Off the top of my head, like they screwed up Spaces and Expose in favor of Mission Control? What about Rosetta? I could go on and on.

I guess those countless users asking how to downgrade from Lion to Snow Leopard are just people who don't actually own Lion after all. I've been a user since Tiger. Don't tell me what doesn't fit me. If you're happy with Lion, then cheers to you as you enjoy your Angry Birds, kid.

Yes, the I'm-afraid-of-change, can't-deal-with-the-future bunch. Much like yourself. Mission control, to me, is far more intuitive than Spaces ever was.

I don't know what fits you, but pick your battles. My comment wasn't aimed in your direction.

No it will not be released in march. Apple has become increasingly susceptible to shareholders demands recently, with it's stock having clumb nearly 70% YTD.

Apple has to meet it's quarterly revenue/profit targets. These targets are at the end of each quarter (3 month period). The current quarter ends at the end of march. Apple surely isn't going to release anything else this month because it has already taken care of revenue targets by releasing the much anticipated ipad already. Apple will almost certainly release the new pc refreshes early next quarter so that those sales combined with (late) ipad purchases made between april-june hit the revenue targets for that quarter.

So to answer your question: NO, the 2012 MBAs will not be released in march, but some time in April or may at the latest.

Well, there is a big difference in waiting two years and waiting just about three month.
Either he buys the new MacBook Pro that will come out within the next weeks. Or he will buy the upcoming Air. There's no problem.

I would get the 2012 MBP or wait for the 2013 Air, because Haswell will be a big jump in performance over IvyB.

Can you please explain the new architecture that haswell will offer over IvyB?

cause I beg to differ

This has got to be the maddest thing I've read for a long time. Here we are debating whether to buy a *current* Mac or wait for Ivy Bridge Macs (no-one has a firm ETA on these) and someone is now saying Haswell is worth waiting for.

At this rate, no-one will buy a new Mac again.

I also find it interesting how people fall for Intel's clever marketing. They keep people on their toes thinking the next CPU will be so evolutionary, so people feel they are missing out. The use of the branding, the clever leaking of info via their PR. They aren't stupid. They want you to keep buying new computers and they can invest in social media marketing to make you believe the next best thing is just around the corner...
