Will a 2018 MacBook Air outperform a 2012 15” MacBook Pro?

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro with 2.3ghz Quad Core Intel processor. I do a little bit of 1080p video editing with final cut and a fair bit of an photography as a hobby with 24mp camera. I’m thinking of going lighter but want to know if the Air would be at least equal to or Better than what I have.

According to Geekbench my 2012 processor still scores better in Geekbech but that’s not really indicative of real world use.

Anyway your thoughts and opinions would be appreciated!

If it were me I’d keep the 2012 MBP primarily because of better peripherals and keyboard. The Air just doesn’t have what the Pros have IMHO. At the end of the day; however, the decision is yours.

Geekbench doesn't tell the whole story as far as actual user experience. I had the exact same laptop as you back in the day and do pretty much the same things on my 2018 air and everything goes by smoothly. Would never go back to a pro at this point since I have all the power I need and I absolutely love the wedge shape of the air. So easy to pick up and go

Agreed, I have the 16/512GB 2018 Air and fast for normal "day to day" usage, even the 1,6Ghz Proc made a good job covering peaks, like loading 20 Tabs... SSD is very fast R/W, you cant compare this with MBP i7 with dedicated graphic, but I personally like the way to use external GPU which also charge my Air and I have graphic power if I needed. And of course a super portable system.
