ToF sensors are already on a lot of XP’s, even some relatively inexpensive ones, and they are used for depth mapping. This isn’t anything new. Lastly, do these, even inexpensive phones, make the current gen of iPhones obsolete? I don’t think so.

Apple will implement it in such a way that will make it a big deal. You mention these mediocre brands that pump out new phones every few months with half a’d features all over the place when in reality they al end up being nothing but a gimmick at the end of the day because they design and implement the features so poorly and no one even uses these features.

based on what I’m reading right now from the latest Kuo and MacRumors post the ToF sensor is going to bring something unseen to iPhone photography as we know it.

Every year the previous phone is outdated. My xs Max is outdated and I don’t feel any type of way about it.

I think the main use for ToF will be for isolating objects. This could allow you to treat them differently, desaturating the background only for example. More creatively, perhaps you could take something from one image and drop it in another, such as placing a person behind a desk.

Photogrammetry is likely a big use. For example, as a game designer, I could capture an object as a fully textured 3D model, although it would only be useful for games if there was some control over the complexity of the mesh.

I had a ToF sensor in my Note 10 Plus it's nice for portrait modes but some stuff like taking a 3D Pic of an object is a gimmmick. The one thing I did like about it a lot is the fact that the Note 10 Plus can take life focus videos for example keeping your colored while the background is black and white or having a cinematic effect.

That feature alone will make me want to upgrade next year when the new iPhones are released.
The live focus video feature can be done without the TOF camera. My P30 doesn’t have the TOF camera, yet it can do that as well.
