Going off what benixau said above, the G3 chip has a lot ground for mobile and home users. I haven't seen a need to upgrade my G3 for years, and in the mobile field, the combination of power used and speed is very good. The G3 is fast enough for lightweight users (that don't need to push their system to its max), and will continue to be, especially as it speeds above 1 GHz. I believe the G3 will show its age only when it can't handle what it is designed to be used for in this current market- battery life and speed.

Hoping you can understand my butchered post :(,
Chase

i don't own a 12 inch powerbook, so i don't really know...but would this laptop really burn up that much more battery time or get much less on a charge than an ibook?

why not make ibooks or entry level apple laptops G4s when all powerbooks go G5s?

should we have G5s and G3s only?

To say that having 2 laptop lines and cases is useless and redundant is like saying that every car company should only make one style of sedan with several engine and features options sold as added features, which would all determine price.

Or why not have both lines? The 12" PB and 14" iBook do not converge. They're different sizes. Again, tell Honda to make an Accord with a Civic engine option, and tell them to sell it for a cheaper price. Merge the lines. ;)

re: Should we have G5s and G3s only?

I think the G3 is fit for the iBook, the G4 is fit for the emac and maybe a low end powerbook and/or iMac, and the G5 is fit for the iMac, PowerBook, and PowerMac. I don't know the battery life for the 12 inch PB either, but I continually got about 4.5 hours out of an iBook while typing and being online. The battery life was pretty good in my opinion, and, especially in the education field, a fine tradeoff for the Velocity Engine and other G4 features.
