A friend wants to purchase a new M1 MacBook Air with a 512GB SSD, the Apple Store does not have it in stock but BestBuy does. He doesn't want to transfer the data himself and he doesn't want the Geek Squad to transfer it as well, he really wants the Apple Store to transfer his data. Will an Apple Store transfer data from a new Mac purchased at BestBuy?

Why not make a call to Apple?

With the ongoing pandemic and limited access to Apple stores, I doubt Apple will accept an appointment to just transfer data but it never hurts to ask. Transferring data from one Mac to another is not difficult as there are a number of ways to do it.

Your friend really needs to learn how to do it him/her self. Lots of instructions from Apple are available.

Migration Assistant is very simple and easy to use. No reason he can't do it on his own unless he is 90 years old and doesn't know anything about computers.

The Apple stores in my city will not transfer data. They don't want to take responsibility for data loss, corruption, or any other issues that may arise.

They will make suggestions but they won't do it.

shows you how confident they are in the product they are selling.... they do same thing with iPhones.. gotta do your own backups and restores.. I like doing it myself.. iCloud backup works well, and so does Time Machine.. never had a bad experience with either...yet.

They will not move your data on to any of their in store equipment. They will usually stand by and coach you how to do it on your own backup drive and computer. As has said before they do not want to be responsible for any data loss.

I was leary about doing this (see my recent post), but Migration Assistant is so easy to use and intuitive. It literally took me 20 minutes to do.
