Will an AT&T iPad Air work in the UK?

I'm buying an iPad Air cellular AT&T model from another Macrumors member.

I'm intending to take it to England and use with a UK sim card. Neither of us are sure if this will work or not.

He purchased it from a guy who worked for AT&T, so I presume it's out of contract.

Can any one advise?

Yes it will work. All SIM iPads, except those sold in Japan, are unlocked.

I had a look on the net for info, yup iPads from US Apple stores are unlocked, but seems sometimes iPads directly from ATT are locked?

That is likely a problem caused by the end user. I've gotten iPads from an AT&T store and they've worked without a problem with a non-AT&T SIM.
