I have been given an old G4 by a friend. I know nothing about apple hardware but need to replace the dvd drive as it appears to be non functional.

I intend to try and install OS X when the job is complete.

My question, is do the pre intel macs require special mac compatible optical drives, or will any pc drive do the trick? (Obviously assuming things like bus are the same.)

    Thanks

Most should work without a hitch. I'd try Pioneer, Sony and Matshita drives first though.

It could depend on the machine, but Sony/Pioneer are good drives to try as was said.

www.macsales.com has some to choose from that should work.

Any DVD-ROM will work for reading discs. Burning requires much more specific brands.
