Who else thinks Apple will just ditch the Lightning on the iPhone 15 instead of switching to USB-C? I mean the writing is kind of on the wall with wireless charging for AirPods, Watch, iPhone and most new cars coming with Aireless Carplay now. I just don't see them giving into the EU by switching to USB-C when they can just eliminate the port altogether. I think Kuo is way off on predicting a switch it USB-C.

I don’t believe it it in the slightest. Apple is giving big video and photos capabilities with ProRAW since a few years, and these functionalities require huge files. Apple can’t rely solely on wireless for data transfers given the size of these files. It would be a big letdown for Pros to jump directly to wireless

Charging speed is still a concern as current MagSafe is 15W.

For AirPods, they released a non-MagSafe version just last week.

I don't put anything past Apple when it comes to removing something..... On paper it doesn't make sense for the reasons that people have mentioned here.. But Apple loves to make these splash moves, if nothing else to get people talking about their products more than they already do.

I just don't think it makes sense yet. The backlash would be huge and I think it would impact sales... My (2019) vehicle does not have Wireless carplay and I would not go buy a new vehicle just to have it, so I would end up not upgrading my phone for a long time. Others would be annoyed with having to carry a bulky (and slower) wireless charger with them. I think Apple would be shooting themselves in the foot if they tried to remove a physical charging/data port in 2023 and I don't think they have that kind of courage.

Same Here, and I use CarPlay a lot. It’s implemented really well in my 2019 Dodge IMO, and I don’t plan to get a new car for several years. I don’t mind plugging it into the car at all.

I see the point on the CarPlay issue but think about it, if apply can sell you a $99 adapter to make your CarPlay wireless in older cars vice a $29 cable why wouldn't they? Just playing devil's advocate as I hope they don't get rid of the port but at this point I don't put anything past them. Look at how quickly they got people to jump on their wireless headphones once they removed the 3.5mm jack. In addition, the photographer point would be moot as they would just force everyone into a iCloud subscription to allow access to the photos on other devices.

My car predates car play altogether so I need to use a physical plug to connect my phone to my car for music or podcasts. So do my speakers at home. A wireless only phone would be a complete non-option for me.

It seems like the sort of thing Apple would do, if they ever got enough circumstances in line that they thought they could get away with it. It poses some significant issues, though. Such as in terms of data transfer, charging speed, etc. They tend to do something a bit ahead of when people are comfortable for the change to take place, but they don't tend to be exceedingly reckless.
