Do you guys think purchasing one now would be a mistake as it not getting the latest firmware upgrades etc. ?

It is supported now but I'm talking in the coming months to a year

No! Lol. From the looks of it, 5.1 is helping a lot of iPad 1 users. Get a refurb one or get one off CL. They are going for $349.

Have they dropped support for the ORIGINAL iPad? NO. So why would they drop support for the 2?

Or even more to the point:

Have they stopped selling ipad2 16GB units as part of their normal line up? NO. So why would they drop support of a product they're selling as new anytime soon?

Support for the iPad2 will probably be dropped around 2-3 generations in. This is just the standard practice Apple does so everything moves forward.

Thx guys am curious here what you mention though, how does 5.1 help 1st gen users (assuming it will benefit 2 users as well)?

5.1 stabilized iPad 1 usage quite a bit. It also made memory management a little better. Safari runs faster and doesn't lag as much, also most functions seem a little snappier.

Why would they stop supporting a product they just announced they were continuing to sell? Why would it not get firmware upgrades? The iPhone 3 still gets firmware upgrades.

iPad 2 is still the second fastest iOS device available behind the new iPad.

So it will be around for at least 2-3 years for software updates.

You understand the questions been answered right? sheesh
