With the release of the new iPhones do you think Apple will drop the prices of their current phones? I'm looking to upgrade so the timing could be just right for me.

It's anyone's guess at this point.

But given the introduction of the 6.1" iPhone, it suggests Apple is willing to trade lower prices for higher sales volume.

The current lineup could drop by $70-150 if Apple wants to dominate at every price point from $200-1000.

Here is what I posted in another thread:
As for the 2018 iPhone line up, if it is anything like the 2017 you will see (and this is all speculative):
  • iPhone 6s drop
  • iPhone 7 $449-$499
  • iPhone 8 $599
  • iPhone X $699
  • iPhone XS (LCD) $799
  • iPhone XS (OLED) $899
  • iPhone XS (OLED, plus) $999
All prices reflective of the lowest storage option. Speculation based off 2017 lineup:

Here is what I posted in another thread:

I'd be surprised if Apple dropped the iPhone X to $699. It would be a $200 gap between iPhone X and iPhone Xs.

The 6.1" iPhone at $749 could fill the gap between iPhone 8 and iPhone Xs.

They usually do drop their prices but not by much.

Watch for the best deals at Best Buy which seems to be Apple's favorite for getting rid of old stock.
Both completely valid points and appreciate the feedback on it. When pricing them, I was comparing just from the 7 to 8, forgetting the X cost more than any phone historically.

It depends on the models, but I expect the 2017 iPhone X to be discontinued and replaced by the 2018 iPhone X with a $100 decease starting around $899.00.

What apple will do is they will drop the price of the 2017 X once the 2018 Xs are announced but it will be to clear out inventory, so one they are gone they are gone.

Well the 2017 X is not going to stick around once the 2018 Xs are announced so it would be to clearance them out.

Apple still sells the iPad mini 2 refurbished for $229. The product is from 2013. Apple would rather put their unsold inventory through a wood chipper rather than lower the perceived value of their iPhone branding.

This what apple usually does when new devices are announced and they are discounting them, they will cut prices in their retail stores and they sell out of what the stores have and not ship them any more. They maybe will be at carrier stores and non corporate retail stores but apple stores will not keep them once the phones are for sale. They may sell them via their refurbished store but this what they have done in the past.

I think they will still keep the 7 as an entry level phone because they won’t have an SE anymore.

I’m going to disagree based on the ability to manufacture a finite number of devices. One the “Delay, cough, cough” on the 6.1” ends Apple will be facing record demand despite the resolution haters. Demand for the 8/8+ will continue to be VERY strong. IMO, they don’t have capacity to continue a 6s, and 7 and meet the demands for the 8/8+ Xs 5.8”and 6.5”. :apple:

I think it depends on the circumstances. Immediately after the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c launch, Apple removed the iPhone 5 from its online and retail stores. Carrier stores might play by different rules but it was clear Apple didn't want to muddle their product stack and have consumers pick between iPhone 5 and 5c.

With the 6.1" iPhone coming in at $600-$800, I doubt Apple would discount the iPhone X to compete with the 6.1" iPhone.

Apple should have sufficient manufacturing capacity. Apple's record for highest number of devices shipped was in calendar Q4'16 with 78.3 million units. Even the most optimistic estimates are betting on 70-75 million for this year.

Usually, the iPhone 8 line will go down by $100 and the RED iPhone will be discontinue and remove from the buy list when the new iPhone is release. I hope Apple keeps the RED iPhones however!

Expect the iPhone 6 and 6s to stick around for emerging markets such as india. The 6s will remain as an entry level option... The 2017 iPhone X will be discontinued, maybe the se too.

Rumours are suggesting
$699 - LCD 6.1"
$899 - iPhone XS 5.8"
$999 - iPhone XS 6.4"

I don't expect Apple to price the latest phones any lower than this. Sure the iPhone 8 series will get a price cut. The X will get discontinued because if Apple slases its price to $799, it will cannibalize most of the sales of the XS 5.8"

I'm still struggling to see how Apple are going to release a brand new, large iPhone for US$700. I don't see how an LCD screen and a single camera can justify cutting $200 from the price. It doesn't sit right with me.

If it came with an A10, instead of A12, I could see it then. Otherwise, it seems like it's going to make up-selling to the OLED models very difficult.
