I'm still struggling to see how Apple are going to release a brand new, large iPhone for US$700. I don't see how an LCD screen and a single camera can justify cutting $200 from the price. It doesn't sit right with me.

If it came with an A10, instead of A12, I could see it then. Otherwise, it seems like it's going to make up-selling to the OLED models very difficult.

Dual-lens (and triple-lens) cameras now separate premium smartphones from regular ones. For Apple, the difference in materials cost between LCD and OLED is $50. That's the most expensive component in the smartphone.

The difference in manufacturing cost between A10 and A12 is literally $0.50 or $1 due to economies of scale. The bulk of the cost of the chip is NRE costs. The chip may cost $300 million to design, but because Apple sells 100 million units, the NRE cost is $3 per chip.

Consumers who are willing to pay $999 for iPhone X already did so last year. Without a significant update, not many are willing to fork out $999 again this year. The $700 iPhone targets the iPhone 6 and 6s holdouts unwilling to pay $999.

I think they will still keep the 7 as an entry level phone because they won’t have an SE anymore.

Apple likely will retain the iPhone 7 in their lineup, they need that ‘Entry’ level price for an older device. The iPhone 7 will be like the new iPhone 6s replacement in someways. The iPhone 7 with the A-10 fusion processor is still very much relevant, and would be the only iPhone in their lineup if they deleted the SE/6S that would have the water resistance rating as well alongside the newer iPhones ahead of the iPhone 7.

Here is what I posted in another thread:
iPhone X at £699 - way off the mark and I will eat my hat if that happens.

Exactly why I think the rumours are true that the XS is an out and out replacement and the X will be discontinued. There’s no logical reduced price tier for it to sit at that doesn’t make it a better option than 6.1” for similar money.

With the release of the new iPhones do you think Apple will drop the prices of their current phones? I'm looking to upgrade so the timing could be just right for me.

Maybe Apple will, maybe Apple won't. But one thing is certain: Many Apple resellers will most certainly drop their prices for their existing (older) inventory to make way for the new models. Target, Walmart, Best Buy, MacMall, B&H, and many other authorized resellers.

Rumours are suggesting
$699 - LCD 6.1"
$899 - iPhone XS 5.8"
$999 - iPhone XS 6.4"

I don't expect Apple to price the latest phones any lower than this. Sure the iPhone 8 series will get a price cut. The X will get discontinued because if Apple slases its price to $799, it will cannibalize most of the sales of the XS 5.8"

I think the iPhone 8 Series and iPhone X will both be gone this year.

iPhone 7 Series will move to iPhone 6s plus pricing tier, ( May be ) we get new price tier from iPhone 6s, and iPhone SE gets lower official price.

$249 - iPhone SE
$349 - iPhone 6s
$449 - iPhone 6s Plus
$449 - iPhone 7
$549 - iPhone 7 Plus
$699 - LCD 6.1"
$899 - iPhone XS 5.8"
$999 - iPhone XS 6.4"

They are not gone until they sell all of them. Including the X. Bestbuy will be selling the X for a while until Apple runs out of stock.
There's been many reports that Apple is going to stop selling the X. Third party retailers are a different story, and the price they charge can, and will be all over the place.

With it confirmed (more or less) the X will be discontinued I think the iPhone 8 series will drop in price and the iPhone 7 drop into the void left by the 6S.

I will pick up an iPhone 8 in the next few weeks once it drops.

I am betting the X will vanish on Apple's site when the XS is introduced. After that they will depend on their resellers to get rid of their inventory.
Exactly. Since there really isn't THAT much of a difference between the 2017 and 2018 X (your average consumer won't recognize or appreciate faster processors and a slightly better camera), continuing to promote and sell the 2017 X would definitely cannibalize sales of the 2018 version, so it only makes sense to axe it from their lineup.
