The watch is a rectangle. Shouldn't non-Hermés owners be allowed to enjoy the beauty of a rectangular analog face? Is there some agreement with Hermés that prevents this for awhile, or forever?

You can be one hundred procent sure that you will never be allowed full customizability of the watchface. That would kill all future special design edition possibilities with fashion partners.
I don't know if that agreement goes so deep as to allow these partners to prevent apple themselves from designing watchfaces that bears some resemblance to these. Who knows... but we will not see much flexibility in this area. Another area where Apple sold out for money over user whishes.

Opening up the watch face completely for third partys would be a PITA (for Apple) because in no time there would be tons of apps with copies of watch faces that are other watchmakers' intellectual property. As opposed to Google and the Android hardware makers, Apple cares about stuff like this. Also, all Apple Watch faces are bespoke and high-class. The only times you see an Apple Watch with an ugly watch face, it's the "photo" watch face with some hideous picture the user chose him-/herself. But yeah, it would be nice if Apple offered an rectangular analog watch face beyond the Hermes ones. I can imagine that we'll get a strictly curated marketplace for watch faces sometime in the future.

Hermes obviously is exclusive. I'm hoping with watchOS four, we will see variety of new Apple Watch faces. Perhaps something along these lines, but exclusive to Apple, excluding third-party developers.

I'm not a fan of rectangle watches normally and I think it's mainly because of the face as I like the AW?

I just want a wider range of faces to chose from. The choice is very limited for my taste as there are only a couple I actually like.

I've always thought it would be cool for someone to develop a skeletonized face like some of the classic mechanical watches that show all, or even a portion, of the movement.

You can do that now with a photo of a dismantled AW. ;P

Would anyone call the new Nike faces "rectangular"?

I do hope so. I find the watch faces so disappointing given the potential. The round analogue faces seem to take up so much space whilst at the same time seeming really small.

It seems like a really obvious area they should improve on. Hopefully they will!
