As someone else alluded to, I think you're referring to the first generation Apple Watch in the stainless model, as Series one was only aluminum.
That said, the 316 L stainless is actually very dense metal. It doesn't take much to scratch it, but that's the nature of stainless steel, it will scratch and develop a worn look to it if you will. But it can be managed, where the aluminum if scratched is permanent.

Her issues is with the crystal breaking. She was thinking it was a different glass from the cheaper ones. I don't know if that is the case. She is one that has to have the most chic one and won't wear it if it is cracked - even slightly.
