Will Apple ever stop selling Combo Drives?

iMovie? You can use your firewire and pipe back your edited movie with all the special effects and sound track back to a blank tape. Then hook up the camera to your TV.

Also iDVD works with external burners. I have an external burner for $100 bucks that exceeds the specs of Apple's stock burner and it works perfectly with iDVD.

so much for work right out of the box... perhaps one day apple should stop providing keyboard and mice, and one day we'll have to buy our own power cords

I've had 3 Macs with Superdrives, and have burnt 2 DVDs (both for other people). If I had spec'ed these Macs myself (and had the option) I'd have left out the Superdrives to save a few euros.

Well, since he would have saved many, many euros by NOT paying extra for the Superdrives he hasn't personally used, my guess would be that he'd still be in the black. (Add to that the interest he could have gained off of his savings.)

I'd rather buy only components that I need; rather than components I have no need for, but you never know, some day in the future, perhaps I might.

Again, it highlights the biggest problem with buying Apple - I don't think it's price, as if spec most PCs out similarly (including software) it's pretty competitive - but choice. Because there's a very limited number of models, and only the most expensive model is very upgradable, and even then some options (such as graphics card) are very limited, it is very, very difficult to buy exactly the Mac you want. You either end up doing without features you want, or paying for features you'll never use.

I can't believe the whining that is going on about a CD drive. If you want a SuperDrive, pay more, and if you don't want to pay more, go to a PC manufacturer.

Apple is ONE company that offers some pretty astounding products. It can't Possibly please everybody. I repeat - ONE company. You're comparing Apple with the rest of the PC world saying "Oh, I can get a Sony for x amount" GO BUY ONE THEN!!

Even though many people dont use the superdrive to burn dvd's it's just something you expect as standard when buying a computer these days,

Maybe this was ok in 2003/2004 but were now in 2006

while you are rigth that we aren't obligated to buy an Apple, but the reason we post here is to see how to make apple better...

i mean sure, there's always something about apple that's not perfect, that other manufacture has an advantage, and we know that, but we aren't here to bash apple just for the heck of it, if you'd call that bashing at all. we show problems to hope it gets improved.

haha, have you seen ALL the post about merom and stuff? i doube 80, heck, 95% of the people really NEED merom at this point, the argument is about future proof... i perfectly agree with you that if you think superdrive is completely unnecessary for you, by all mean save the money to get something more important, but it should be an option, considering it doesnt cost apple much, and it's for the convenience of its customer...

This comes up now and again, but I really don't get it. Apple is not the only company that puts combo drives in its lower end of the line products.

Untrue, lowend PC and low end Mac are poles apart in terms of price. For the £399 Apple are asking for the Mini I could easily get a desktop PC with keyboard/mouse/speakers, display and yes, a DVD burner. Don't get me started on the £750 for the Macbook 🙄

The sad part is that Superdrives cost less nowdays than regular combo drives. Once Blu-Ray drives triggle down from the high-end then the Superdrive will be standard on the bottom.

When Vista ships you will see the Blu-Ray drives starting to be standard equipment with the Minis. The Mini Jr will be the size of the Aiport Express with integrated graphics and Flash hard drive too. No internal drives for that.
