Will Apple exchange a watch with no receipt?

So I got an Apple watch for Christmas but no receipt.

Would Apple let me exchange it for a gift card so I can wait for the Apple watch 2?

"unusual circumstances" could include being bought anywhere but an apple store. perhaps at target or best buy, which ran high profile discount promotions recently.

Only items that have been purchased directly from Apple, either through the Apple Online Store or at an Apple Retail Store, can be returned to Apple. Apple products purchased through other retailers must be returned in accordance with their respective returns and refunds policy.
