I posted in another thread about issues I am having with my 16" Macbook Pro.

It is experiencing constant kernel panics.

Doing some research, I found out that Apple has been replacing logic boards on these Macbooks to solve the issue.

That tells me there are a lot of 16" MBPs out there with bad logic boards.

However, my 16" MBP is out of warranty and I did not buy Apple Care.

If there is a "known" hardware issue will Apple repair their computers out of warranty?

I just need to know this before I even attempt to contact Customer Care.

I am not aware of a known issue with high rates of board failures. The biggest known issue I am aware of pertains to the power draw the lower level GPU models have when using external displays in some configurations. That said, those impacted by this issue are not reporting logic board failures in any systematic form, AFAIK.

Presumably your Mac is only about a month or so out of warranty and it sounds like you could have gotten a lemon. Apple is a company that is known for good will, especially if you get the right person and approach it the right way. If I was in your position, I would try to see if they would diagnose the system outside of warranty and if they would consider making a goodwill exception to repair it. If they do, awesome. If not, it's a tough situation but the system is outside of warranty.

You've probably already seen this, but just in case...

Did you try turning off Power Nap and Graphics switching?
Did you check Apple's site to see if they have an official repair program?

As the other poster mentioned, I'd call Apple and see what you can get. Write down all the relevant info before you call. In particular when it first started happening, how often, what is the result of these panics etc. And be nice on the phone!

Firstly, thank you both for your response.

Yes, I have been researching and prodding this issue for months now. I am aware of the power nap and graphics switching uncheck option. Did both and it made no difference.

I have been on the phone with Apple support over the past 12 hours. I am doing a Diagnostics Test this morning and a tier-2 support individual is going to call me back later this afternoon.

They do not have anything official in their records about logic board issues with the 16" MBP but I am hoping, in the end, they will fix my MBP under warranty if that turns out to be the problem. Will let you know.
