Trying to figure out if 256gb Iphone 16 will be sufficient storage. I understand a lot of the AI will take place directly on the phone so Im wondering how much space, if any, it will require. Any ideas?

Will Apple Intelligence Take Up More iPhone Storage

Impossible to know how much storage you need as everyone is different? How much space do you generally have free on your phones?
iPhone 15 Pro here - just enabled Apple Intelligence with the iOS 18.1 RC ahead of the launch on Monday. I tried to use Clean Up which also downloaded something before it became available in Photos. I am seeing this under Settings > General > iPhone Storage > iOS:
As iMatt said above, 4GB seems to be the on device requirement for Apple Intelligence in iOS 18. I‘d be ok with a bit more storage consumption and more lag in exchange for on device writing tools; all of those requests are processes in the cloud per the Apple Intelligence report under Settings >Privacy.
