I’ve got a handful of apps that are now left to make a dark mode app icon and it’s just annoying when majority are.

What are the chances that Apple makes it a requirement for devs to update a simple design element?

What are your thoughts?

I think I’m down to just 4 apps not being dark mode icon on my devices.

No chance they will force it at this point. It’s been like this for years. Only hope is Apple eventually copies Android and we get an icon picker and they allow icon packs in the App Store. Then you can change it to whatever you like.

I very much doubt it. “Let the market decide” - if people quit using the apps that don’t support Dark Mode icons, then that will prompt devs to update.

Of course the corollary is true - if you keep using the app, why should the dev care?

I don’t see it happening. The reverse of this is an issue as well. There are lots of apps that only have a dark icon and look out of place when using light mode, including many of Apple's own apps (TV, Wallet, Stocks, Fitness, Watch, Voice Memos, Compass, Measure, Magnifier, Passwords, Playground, Journal, GarageBand).

If they were to make it a requirement to include a dark icon, then there would probably need to be a requirement to include a light icon as well. But how would they enforce it? Have someone inspect the icons visually, or use AI to ensure one is light and one is dark? Lazy developers could just use the same icon for both.

BTW, you can create a shortcut to open an app and have it use whatever image you’d like for the icon on the Home Screen. You’d lose the app’s long press context menu and badges, but that may not be a big deal.

It makes me mad.
Sure I can understand the indie developer, but I have several apps made by companies that rack BILLIONS each year and they fail to implement dark mode both for icons and the app itself. Probably less than $100 to implement.
I hate the terrible smorgasbord of apps in my device, some darks some not, some with liquid glass, some not.
I believe that Apple should enforce all the elements of the newest iOS versions for every app made by larger companies at least (or with above X sales income).

I emailed a few I have that didn’t have dark mode icons and asked if they had an update planned/coming soon if they could include a dark mode icon and all but one did!

This will likely never happen because apps like games sometimes use the entire icon and there wouldn't be much they could do to facilitate dark mode. There's also other apps that use solid color backgrounds matching their brand and they're not going to want to change that just for dark mode.
