Before they make it bigger they need to make it thinner. A 4mm iMac serves no practical purpose but damn if it wouldn't look cool as heck

The article could have mentioned the ongoing burst of 32" 6K displays. Last year at this time there was only one (not counting the Pro Display XDR), the Dell. By this September, there will be at least seven! See the 32" / 6K WikiPost.

Little is known about the LG, which has won multiple design awards, but nobody (who can talk about it) has ever seen. It is due in September. So far, the most advanced panel is by BOE in the Geekon Hero 32, which launched July 31.

They are all edge-lit, as far as we know, so none of them compete directly with the Pro Display XDR.

I'll guess LG will launch a new UltraFine 5K at the same time they launch the UltraFine 6K.

The burst in 27" 5K displays in production is even more amazing, going from two in 2022 (LG and Apple, not counting Chinese displays using the same panels) to more than twenty today (counting China), most launched in the past year. BOE is in play here as well, via Geekon.

I can’t really see Apple trying to do 27" and/or 32" Retina iMacs in the face of that kind of competition. The old Retina 5K iMac had the field mostly to itself (Dell dropped out in 2016, HP and Philips followed them not long afterwards). Plus, it’s a moving target. OLED is coming. I think it’s far more likely we’ll see Apple launch a new 27" Studio Display alongside a new 32" Studio Display Plus. The Pro Display XDR will move on to 7K/8K and a true mini-LED backlight.

In the past when the Thunderbolt display cost $1000 it was easy to price a base 27" iMac to be comparative. Right now they could only really price a 'Pro' or 'Max' to exceed the $1600 Studio Display.

Maybe the 27" Studio Display could be refreshed with a new $1200 model that lets them slot in a 27" iMac at $1600-$1800?

Ha, Apple would never drop prices!
The current ASD literally has an iPhone 11 complete with 64 GB of storage in it, for whatever reason!

While I still have the 2020 27-inch iMac in storage, my hardware use is now solely an iPad Pro + Studio Display. The 14-inch MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) if I am working from home. Doubt I will go back to an iMac if no re-design.

I hope the people clamoring for a larger iMac aren’t the same people trying to silence those clamoring for a smaller iPhone. And vice versa.
Those folk are a mystery as they say "Get an Android phone then" or "Get a PC".

Arguably the most beautiful computer ever made. And not just aesthetically beautiful, but beautifully functional.

With today’s cooler-running chips and miniaturization, and without a CD drive taking up space, it’s possible to revive the sunflower iMac design in a modern interpretation. It could feature powerful speakers, a full complement of ports, and a fan-cooled computer housed in the timeless dome-shaped base, now disguised as a speaker grille for striking minimalism. Especially now, the floating display design would shine, as an OLED panel could be impressively thin, large, and high-quality. It could be everything the original was—and more. LLM estimates an up-to 34% display weight reduction with a 30" OLED panel, versus the original 25 mm, 15" LCD display, so the original display arm design may work well.

The update that I would like to see: 30 inch iMac with the same microprocessor and memory options as a MacBook Pro.

I am still using my 27 inch iMac. Several associates are also using five to ten year old 27 inch iMacs. Why? The large screen iMac is the perfect executive computer. It has a nice sleek, clean appearance and fits nicely on a desk. There isn't a bunch of cables messing up the desk or inviting someone to trip on. Part of the magic of Apple is esthetics. The Mac mini is not about esthetics - it is all about a box you can toss somewhere. I left Dell because I liked the power and clean design of Apple’s large screen all in one iMac.

The Mac Studio or Mac mini with a Studio display is overpriced and is the wrong form factor for me. By eliminating the large screen iMac Apple has killed my reason for buying a second computer.

If I am going to be stuck with a box and cables, I will just use my existing Macbook Pro 16 and have the same mess of cables as a Mac Mini or Mac studio.

For some a basic 24 inch iMac is fine. Unfortunately, Apple Silicon hasn’t been good to me. The larger screen iMac may not be a hot seller but I know a bunch of people who have yet to switch to Apple silicon because they like their large screen iMacs.

I'll probably keep using my 2019, 27 inch iMac for another couple years. I am still hoping that Apple will introduce something that will excite me. I've been waiting awhile, I guess I can wait a bit longer before I scrap the idea of purchasing a new desktop.

Turning the Mac mini into a good computer and introducing the Mac studio as a great computer probably stuck a fork in any iterations of the iMac beyond the basic entry level.

I don't think a bigger iMac is coming.

The "bigger iMac" is a Mac Mini or Mac Studio + Studio Display. I think they will release upgraded displays, but there will not be a high-end iMac. The release of the Mac Studio and the option for higher specs on the Mini were signs that Apple prefers this "modular" approach to desktops than releasing a bigger all-in-one.

Still working away on my 2019 27-inch… want to hand it down to my kids when Tim decides it's time to serve up an overly expensive 32-inch model.

For now, I'll enjoy hearing those fans roar anytime I do batch edits using Topaz apps!

I took this photo back in 2002 of my beloved 17" iMac G4. Her name was Irma. Irma the iMac.

Would you agree or disagree with this statement: today's iMac has as much character and infinitely more than it did from the iMac G5 until the 2021 M1 redesign?
I had my iMac G4 during my college years in my dorm. One day I was helping a friend burn a CD. When I opened the CD tray from the domed base, put the disc in, and closed the tray he exclaimed "Oh my god the little snowpuff ate the CD!!"

I agree that today's hardware is more personable than the sterile aluminum of Apple's 2005-present design philosophy, but I don't think anything can top that moment for technological warm and fuzziness.

PS: The technological specifics of typing this anecdote made me feel really, really, REALLY old.

Lol. You were born in 1983 experiencing all that. I was born in 1993 and experiencing the same stuff. Crazy days of the early internet. Burning CDs was SUPER high tech when I was able to do it on the family iMac G3. Downloading American Idiot on Limewire. AOL Instant Messenger. Good times!

A new big iMac would be dumb and wasteful.
Respectfully disagree. It's highly likely that Apple Silicon will experience much longer periods of support than previous Intel Macs, and the switch away from discrete graphics means it's highly likely these machines will not die a premature death from heat stress. I'm more interested in a large screen iMac now than I've ever been.

I don't think a larger imac is needed, because it's not meant to be a professional computer with so many windows open. It's designed to be parked in the living room where Charlie the 8 year old will write his history paper, Jessica the 14 year old will watch some Tik Tacks, mama Barbara to sip wine and stalk old high school friends on facebook, and dad Mike that will use it to do taxes once a year. None of those require a larger screen. 24" is the perfect size.

But I do wish it had video in. I do wish for that.

I feel like a lower cost Apple display would be the better solution. You can pair it with a Mac mini or a MacBook Air or anything else. You also don't get stuck with a beautiful display that you can't use when the computer is outdated. I still use my 24 inch LED display.

This.
One of the main reasons why everyone loved and pines for another 27” iMac, is because of the value.
Well, guess what, any 32” 6K iMac is going to be expensive!

So Apple, throw us a cheaper 5K 27” standalone Studio Display.
Price it at 1299 (often it’s on sale for this price).

We’ll pair with a M4 Mac mini for reasonably price powerful setup.

You make your margins, and save the environment from more e-waste.

I would say just package up the iMac's screen into a standalone display. Keep the white bezel, webcam, and speakers. Give it some color options to fit in an assortment of rooms. And as always the excellent Apple industrial design & build quality that is unmatched from any other company.

24" Display - $999
27" Studio Display - $1499
32" Pro Display XDR - $4999

How hard can this be? In the interim I’ve replaced my 27iMac with an $800 Mac mini and a Samsung monitor. So Apple has given up a $2000 sale for a $800 sale. Smart.

the overall market does not consist of just one person. The objective is to sell more macs total ... not just iMacs.
if you buy the $800 mini and Apple pulls in another person from Windows market at $800 than that was "$2,000" to "$1,600" move. Given Apple takes the profit margin on the main SoC chargeback now and also is looking for services revenue from both machines that is probably a decent trade-off. Pull in 1.5 folks (on average) from Windows market and it is $2,000 in the new set up also. More affordable prices tends to draw more customers.

For a substantial amount of time Apple kneecapped the mini ( and somewhat the Mac Pro with price increases. e.g. doubling) so that the iMac could flourish. The Mini form factor greatly better matched the M-series ( M1/2 and M2 Pro ). That vast majority of the overall desktop monitor already own a discrete monitor. So selling those folks another monitor was just as much as market impediment as it was a asset.

Freed from hobbling the Mini's GPU prowlness and introducing the Studio at a much more affordable price than the Mac Pro effectively put the 'large screen' iMac in a much weaker position if Apple actually let it be an 'even playing field' fight. The average selling price of a Mini Pro and Studio is no where near $800.

apple explicitly said the Studio was the replacement for the large screen iMac. There is a set in deep denial that Apple didn't choose that path.

Folks who were buying mid-high level legacy Intel 27" iMacs are more likely looking at at least Mx Pro ( or better) computational abilities. That isn't going to be $800-900 ish priced boxes.

P.S. in general over long term PC market it has been true that a $2,000 PC need would generally turn into a $800-1000 need over time if workload stays about constant. Apple can't escape that forever. The should be trying to put more bang for buck in their $800 device; everyone else in the PC business is trying to also.

I don't see many 27 inch iMac's in living rooms. I see a lot of 27 inch iMacs in home offices and executive offices. The owners aren't technology fanatics. They just want a large screen computer that doesn't look messy and eat up a lot of space.
