Hello,

Although Smart TVs now have a lot of apps and more capabilities, I still think they are not close to what a TV box does in terms of usability, speed and updates.

I have a Samsung 2017 UHD TV. Many apps are laggy, other apps are completely missing (eg. apple music or twitch).

So my point is, I want to buy a TV box and I will probably go with the Apple’s one as I am deep in their ecosystem.

Are they planning to release a new box? Did anyone hear or read anything about a potential new android 4K/8K tv? Or should I just go with the 5th gen which is 2 years old?

Thanks

I’d have a guess and say that there won’t be a new Apple TV for quite some time. They recently renamed it to Apple TV HD so I wouldn’t expect a new model at least until they launch the Apple TV+ service later in the year.

'm not sure why anyone would care about 8K ever. Surely by now the Law of Diminishing Returns has set in big time.

Buy the Apple TV 4K now. You'll absolutely love it.

I recommended it to a friend at the gym a while ago as he has iPhone X, iMac, Apple Watch etc and buys film from iTunes. I saw him the other evening at the gym and asked him how he's getting on with the Apple TV. His reply was "It's fantastic, it's the best thing that i've bought in years".

Buy the Apple TV 4K with confidence. Unless you have specialized needs (in which case you probably know what they are), you'll love it. And since there is virtually no TV market for resolutions higher than 4K (and there doesn't really need to be) and the current Apple TV 4K already supports Atmos and Dolby Vision, it's pretty future-proofed already.

To be sure, there are things some of us want that it doesn't have -- my big one is lossless audio passthrough. But adding that wouldn't require new hardware.

I’m not sure how one is deep in the Apple ecosystem and lacks an Apple TV. That said there’s not much Apple could add to it hardware wise to improve it.

I have a 2018 Sony 900f 85” and basically use Apple TV most of time along with an Xbox x for Blu-ray or other things. The tv and it’s smart apps? Never.
