I like the aluminum finish on and overall strength of Apple’s USB SuperDrive, but am concerned the cable might change to USB-C. Is this likely to happen in the future? Just thinking about getting myself one.

If you need an optical drive, buy a 3rd-party USB external drive.
I'd recommend that you get one with Bluray, as well ... BD/DVD/CD.
AND... on top of that... get M-DISC capabilities, too.

Better than any Apple-labeled drive.

I highly, highly doubt it. However, I have one, too, and need it periodically. I sometimes get medical legal cases to review and about half of them come on DVD-R. The Apple SuperDrive works perfectly on my M1Pro Mac with Apple's USB A-C adapter. Mine is currently plugged in to one of the ports on my Studio Display and I haven't had any issues with it.

To be honest, I prefer when I'm sent cases on DVD-R. A lot of law firms use the crappiest, cheapest Amazon no-name Chinese daily-discount USB thumb drives when they send me cases like that and I've had a couple go bad on me after just a few times accessing the data. Whenever they send me cases like that, I transfer them to DVD-R straight away. I don't want to store these cases on my personal computer's hard drive due to the privacy of the data, so having it on DVD is convenient, can't easily get damaged like cheap USB flash, and they can be easily destroyed and rendered unreadable when I no longer need the data (my shredder will cut through CD/DVD media).

Is it worth buying one of these? Woot currently has them on sale (new - open box). I’d be using it with my M2 MBA.

I have an older DVD USB drive that I’ve had for years. But, sometimes the movie just stops playing on a new chapter/scene.

I've had mine since launch and it's still going strong. I still need it occasionally for ripping DVDs or the odd CD I buy and it works fine with a usb-c adapter.
