Been using these various dock connectors for 5 years now, never even tried to be careful. I've never had so much as a seam open up. I don't know what you guys do... maybe this is just the forum of unlucky saps.

so i'm going to go to apple tonight for this. Should I unjailbreak my phone before I go in? I hate to deal with that. i guess I could pretend I forgot my phone and only brought the cable.

"Hey, I'm here for my appointment for my iPhone. Oh shoot, I forgot my iPhone."

They'd just say sorry to you and help service the next customer who wasn't "stupid" enough to "forget" their iPhone.

Seems like you're going through a lot of trouble just to ATTEMPT to replace a cable, with no guarantee of them actually replacing it.

My cable ripped up, and I asked if they could replace it. No dice, so I bought a new one. Seriously, just cough up the 20-30 bucks and get on with your life.

Hmmm so do you think its worth even making an appointment and trying? Or are they just gonna laugh at me lol?

You think too much (and not about important stuff). Take the cable. Who cares if you have the phone or not, or whether it's jailbroken or not - it's not a phone issue. Be honest, state your case, and they will say either "yes" or "no" to the replacement. Simple as that - save the drama!

OBTW:
1) Just b/c a few people on here complain about the same issue does NOT make it a common phenomenon. There are millions of Apple iPod/iPhone cables out there, most of which function well with normal use.
2) I expect with normal use, all cables the are repeatedly plugged/unplugged will fail.
3) You don't have to buy an APPLE cable as a replacement.
4) Inside, I am laughing at you :D

This. It seems like people on here are so used to trying to lie or omit information that when they have a legitimate problem they don't know what to do. Also, I'm not sure how posting here and waiting a day or 2 for forum members to answer is any quicker than calling the Apple store near you and just asking.

OP - Headphones and cable are almost impossible NOT to get replaced. I mean, unless you put them in a blender they're not really going to care. Over 2 iPods and 2 iPhones I've probably have my headphones replaced about 10 times.

Same problem here! I just put some electrical tape on it. I agree that this cable seems to be of low quality. I am still using the power cable that came with my ipod which I bought 2 yrs ago!

relax, it's covered

When my cable split and frayed at the iPhone end of the cable, they replaced it no questions. I didn't even go to the Genius Bar.

I showed it to the Concierge, and asked, "Is this covered under warranty?" She said yes, went to the wall of accessories, took one out of the box, handed it to me. Took my old one and put it in the new box.

I don't think she even entered any data in the computer regarding the exchange.

A lot of these problems are caused by wrapping the cords wrong. All that twisting and bending will eventually break the cables. Apple will replace cords, power cords too, if the plastic breaks.

not mine

My cable split at the iPhone end of the cable late year. Apple told me it wasn't covered because it was normal wear but I could buy a new one for thirty bucks. I said no thank you. I tried electrical tape to cover the end but it would keep coming off. I also had to listen to all the cracks about my crappy looking new IPhone cable. Its been over a year now that I have been using the the cable with exposed end with no problems.:(

cheers

I don't do anything. My phone isn't even high up on a dresser, it's either charging on my bed next to me, or on a pile of books right next to my bed. It took about 10-11 months for mine to start pulling away.
When a certain amount of pressure pulls the newer style cables to one side, the sheathing pulls loose at the neck on the connector. Then, it just continues to come off all of the way around from there.

Why do I need my phone if it's not the issue? It's the freaking cord?

And I worry because I don't want my warranty voided if I walk into apple and the guy notices I have winterboard running. Of course, I guess I could just disable that temporarily. I'm not trying to lie to get something for free. This POS cable is a month old and cracked. That's not right, and I'm not paying 30 dollars for a 50 cent cable to replace it. If anything I'll go to monoprice and get 15 of them for that price.

Just to update, i scheduled a genius apt and went in an hour ago. They said as long as my warranty was valid, no problem to get a replacement. Had to disable my theme and hide a few icons, but all they looked at was my settings for my serial number. signed some paper, then left in 5 minutes.
