Pretty simple question: at the preorder on the 19th, will Apple sell the XR sim-free, or will you have to pick a carrier and “log into it” before you can continue?

You can simply select the T-Mobile version. It’s unlocked and comes with a SIM card.

Can anybody confirm this?

In the past, the guaranteed unlocked version is Verizon’s, but apparently that’s not the case anymore with Verizon locking their phones again.

The XS and XS Max were available in a SIM-free version at the opening of pre-order. This might be an indication of what will be available at the XR pre-order, however I don’t know.

Go try to buy the phone now on the Apple site. It tells you when you're nearing checkout that what you're buying when you pay full price is an unlocked phone with the carriers Sim card

For the XS, you can select any carrier model, click continue, select activate later, and it lets you check out without entering any carrier info. They all say unlocked. So I wonder if you can buy any model and not just T-Mobile if you plan on using another carrier...

Every XR you pay full price for from Apple is unlocked.

Right, but in the past you couldn’t buy a carrier model online without entering carrier account info, except for T-Mobile. That appears to no longer be the case.

In the past I used to purchase T-Mobile version. Always unlocked and works with my AT&T sim. This year I was able to purchase a Verizon unlocked XS Max and it worked with my AT&T sim. To be clear, I purchased it from the apple store and not Verizon directly.
