Not true. You can restore from backup from an older iOS. You can’t restore from newer to older.Remember if they replace your phone, the new phone won’t be on iOS10. Plus I don’t think you can restore a phone with a newer version of iOS from an older version of iOS backup so you may run into issues with your data..

i see thanks. Your son is so lucky to get a new phone.My son was replacing battery at Apple store. Something went wrong and his old phone (with new battery) did not boot. They gave him refurbished phone at no cost. So, even if you are "only replacing battery", you can end up with refurbished phone - with current iOS. That's why the warning from others.
