Will AT&T iPhone 7 work on Sprint if switching SIM?

Hey Guys!

Giving away my iPhone 7 Plus to a friend.

Although it is unlocked (as I paid full price for it), I did order it as an AT&T compatible model.

My friend is on Sprint network.

Now I know the two networks are not compatible.

However, if I simply switch out my AT&T SIM card for his/her SPRINT SIM card, will the phone be fully compatible with the Sprint network?

In advance, I thank you for any assistance you can provide.

What is the model number of your iPhone 7 Plus?

If it's an A1784 (the model specifically designated for AT&T) it will NOT work with Sprint (or any CDMA carrier, for that matter).

I second what @jetsam says. The AT&T version carries an Intel modem, which can only operate on a GSM network. Verizon and Sprint are CDMA, with a Qualcomm modem, which is capable of utilizing that network type only.

You don’t have to look at model numbers. I don’t believe any iPhone does both cdma and gsm on the same phone, so there’s no way any phone can switch between at&t and sprint.

For the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, the Verizon, SIM-Free, and Sprint versions (models A1660 and A1661), support both technologies. Please see the Apple spec for those phones, at:
https://www.apple.com/iphone-7/specs/
The prior two models, the 6 and 6S, were universal models, and worked on all four major US carriers. (Or at least, were capable of working on all four carriers. Sprint, especially, tends to try to ban non-Sprint supplied phones, but this is not due to technical limitations.)

Getting off Sprint is always a good idea, IMHO.
Your friend might also consider Cricket - your phone works fine there, too.
And you're a very good friend to be giving away a 256 GB jet black iPhone 7 Plus!

My best friends can't afford to buy really good phones. I get more pleasure letting them have the phones than selling it.
