Or even without the need of an iPhone. Surely one can setup via web.
Some families have multiple phones running iOS and Android. Perhaps limit functionality but wouldn’t the AW sales increase with a larger audience?

Maybe when the Apple Watch eventually becomes untethered. But it's a massive USP for the iPhone, the phones practically sell themselves following the release of the Apple Watch.

No one can argue that it's the best smart watch on the planet, it's crushing anything Android is doing, and it has become the best selling watch of all time period, so don't expect it to be untethered anytime soon as Apple clearly don't need to worry about bringing it over to Android just yet.

Not a chance, apple wants to give people as little as possible reasons to get an android phone.

AW sales are just fine. At this point Apple would rather get one on the wrist of every iOS user before worrying about other platforms.

Rumor is that the next gen watch is going to have a "kid mode" that may make it easier to manage without an iOS device...that may be as close as you can get:

Apple Watch was one of the few reasons I switched back to Apple hardware after a few years on Android. Guess it worked for Apple in my case but I have zero regrets. This ecosystem, while far from perfect, is much better than anything Android offers IMO.

Used to be, you needed to connect your iPhone to iTunes on your computer to do anything with it.

I literally cannot remember the last time I connected my iPhone to a computer. The march towards autonomy is a constant for Apple devices.

We have already seen this principle at work in the Watch, for example with the advent of its own App Store. So I do expect that Apple has plans for an untethered Watch, and when it comes it will seem a natural evolution and not some dramatic paradigm-shift.

And when it comes, it won't be to the benefit of Android or any body else's platform.
