Is Barry Bonds' homerun record chase valid?

two things.

1.) no matter what anyone here says or does, the record will be valid and will be in the record books. just becasue it is valid doesn't mean he will be respected. asterisk or no asterisk.

2.) until september 1991, there was an asterisk next to Roger Maris's record. That was eventually removed. I think the controvesy is something of the present. future generations will look at the steroid era of baseball as just a different time of the game, just like the shorter season were part of the game. maybe even remove it someday [if it is in fact placed on the record.]

barry obviously didn't care about taking steroids to be #1, so i take it he'll have acheived his goal regardless of the asterisk. not that any of it is fair, but it is what it is.

Nope, nor should McGuire's record. As far as I'm concerned,Maris still holds the record for most HR's in a season. I believe Bonds said that he never KNOWINGLY took a steroid..Yeah right. You're gonna take a pill or a cream from a trainer or Dr. no questions asked?Yeah, sure he wasn't on anything  All guys in their late thirties, early fourties get that big that fast naturally. And they all have heads the size of a watermelon and veins popping out of the center of their forehead. I've been around enough guys that have juiced at the gym with everything from andro spray,to needles to the new designer stuff out there (like Superdrol and Halladrol and Epastane) to see the results and effects of it..They all have that bulky, bloated "cut" look. Not that hard chiseled look when you do it naturally..And when you're done with a cycle,if you don't do a post cycle pill or another cycle, you lose all your gains.Like a vicious circle...
Another thing not helping Bonds at all is Barry himself. The fact that he's an obnoxious, self absorbed, self centered, pompous, arrogant cantankerous prick isn't helping his case either. If he was the least bit likeable, people may tolerate him more...

cantankerous... nicce

Had to mull this over some, but that I recall, I've watched Aaron, McGwire, Mays, Sosa, Killebrew, Robinson, Schmidt, McCovey, Thomas, McGriff, Musial, Stargell, Bagwell, Murphy, Bench, Howard and Belle all take batting practice at one time or another.

Aaron's smooth, wrist action put balls high and deep over the left and center field walls with hardly a sound. He was the epitome of finesse at the plate.

I've never witnessed a batting practice scene where the crack of the bat sounded like an explosion so much so, that the players warming up in the outfield, managers and players walked up the dugout steps, and fans literally stopped dead in their tracks to watch in awe. McGwire's time in the cage did that. It was a thrill to watch and is part of my and my son's baseball history.

As others are saying, both history and time will out on the current Bonds controversy and the record books. I'll leave both the condoning and condemnation to those who may know more. I just like the game, and ya, I want Rose in the Hall, too. So what? The Georgia Peach had more than fuzz on him, and in his day, he managed to earn both enemies and admirers.

The record will stand but public opinion will be the judge of his legacy.
Perhaps for the next couple of generations. After that.... I think more people will be accepting of Bonds and the record.
Maybe he'll break his legs or something when he hits 754
I think 'or something' is more likely. And that 'or something' is fan interference for the worse. I think you're gonna start seeing heavier and heavier security around Bonds as he gets even closer.

As for the record. I don't want to see him break it just because Bonds is a huge jerk. If anything I'd like to see an asterisk but it ain't gonna happen. As Silencio said, where do you draw the line. The game changes so much you'd have a set of records for every few years.
