I would not be surprised if AT&T eases up on this strict policy of keeping the phone locked to them.
I happen to have bought my way out of my contract for $255 after 7 month of hardly any actual phone use. 95% of my time has me and my iPhone 4 on a WiFi Network and I use Google Voice Telephone number and the app Talkatone for free phoning. I told the rep exactly why I was buying my way out of my contract. So, basically, bought phone for $199 plus $255 fee equals roughly $450 and all the coin paid to AT&T for not much in return. I went with the absolute cheapest plan for an iphone, and it was about $500 US for 7 months, plus a sign up fee of $50-ish if I remember correctly. AT&T's earingings in this deal, and in the general contract most commit to, is over-priced, IMO.
I can and will use an ultra dumb phone for $20 US every THREE months for that other 5% of the time...
There is also the hack to use that phone locked to AT&T with AT&T's own, inexpensive non-contract, pre-pay with very affordable prices, without jailbreaking....
Absolutely love the iPhone 4 as a device, and use it every day even though I also have iPad 2 and MBP. I do not like paying near $80 a month for near nothing.
Ease up, AT&T
