Will External HDDs Slow Down My Mac?

i've just bought a mac since december, and up till now when i remove my HDD it's much Faster

Specs:
Macbook Pro
2.4Ghz
2GB Ram
Intel Core 2 Duo
And A Toshiba 120 GB Hard Drive

External HDs shouldn't slow down your MBP. What might be happening though is that Spotlight might be indexing the drive, which would slow down performance.

If you are using Time Machine, that could be slowing it down due to it backing up your system.

I noticed this too. How would I stop spotlight from indexing the drive? If possible.
