Can someone give me a good, practical reason for a different band connection that would actually improve on the existing one?
Only possible contender would be the old regular pins that pretty much all watches uses. That would give you probably a few hundred thousands to choose from.

Highly unlikely that Apple goes that route.

Right, and they don't have to go that route because adapters to use those pins (aka "spring bars") are cheap and plentiful.
 
This was something I wondered about too when I first bought my watch. I don't think it'll happen for at least a couple more iterations. We don't even know if S3 will be coming out this year or next. Depending on the timing of releases, I'm hoping the current band connectors remain the same for at least S3 and S4.

I have a decent investment in my bands. And if they weren't compatible at one point or another, that would be disappointing, primarily being they have zero resale and would be rendered useless. I guess that's the downside to owning counterparts to technology.
