Simple question. I vaguely remember there being an issue with the iphone 5 the last time it was released with people either wanting to buy it without a contract (or maybe it was just an unlocked version).

Just want to make sure I can....my iphone 5 was stolen out of contract (no insurance) so I'm in the market for the new one.

These kinds of posts make me sad... how is ANYONE on MR going to know what apple has planned? May as well ask random strangers to get your answer. (which you are doing on this forum.... funny isn't it.)

There are several unlocked phone dealers you can get an unlocked iPhone 5S from. Expect pricing to be at least $400 above retail though.

I was about to make a post asking this same question. So glad I saw this one first. I plan to buy 2 iPhones day 1, one of them being at full retail so I hope I have no issues. If the rumors are true that this phone will be released immediately after launch(a week or so later) I will be one happy camper!

I think it's a country thing because we can get unlocked iPhones directly from Apple on launch day here in the UK. Which is what I'll do and whack my sim-only card in.

So much confusion and misunderstanding. All you need is an existing account with At&t, Verizon, etc. You can then order your new phone as a device only upgrade. You can do this online, at the Apple store, it doesn't matter. It's a full price upgrade whether or not you qualify for a discount from your carrier. I did it last year no problem. And yes the phone will be fully unlocked.

As far as walking in off the street with no account and wanting a new phone only that may take a month or two until Apple decides to allow that.

I'm upgrade eligible right now, but I'm looking to pay full retail to preserve my unlimited data with vzw. The apple website will only let me purchase at the subsidized price. That's the only option it gives me.

This is correct - if you are upgrade eligible, you CAN'T buy the full price phone online from the Apple store. It is included in some of their buried fine print in a FAQ:

A new 2-year contract with Verizon Wireless is required for customers who are new to Verizon Wireless or for existing customers who qualify for a discounted iPhone price. Existing Verizon Wireless customers who do not qualify for a carrier-subsidized discounted iPhone pricing can also purchase a full-price phone activated to their existing contract without extending their contract duration.

Will they sell it to me at an Apple store for full retail since I'm upgrade eligible?

I hope so, cause I am in the same boat as you (VZW unlimited data customer buying a full price phone). The biggest downside is going to be availability - it took me weeks to get a store pickup iphone 5 in the Apple Store after they were released - it was a nightmare for VZW phone availability here in SoCal. (And since we can't order online, I assume we won't be able to pre-order either).

I would find them available at Radio shacks, etc, but they wouldn't sell them to me because I was paying full price (they would only sell contract renewals, I assume because they make more $$ off them).

I am hoping we will be able to pre-order a no-contract phone price via Verizon directly (As much as I hate doing that vs going through Apple)

You'd be better off to wait and buy it from Apple factory unlocked. Buying a "no commitment" phone can still have it tied to the carrier.

Well, that is not an option for the VZW phone. But if the VZW iphone 5 was any indication, it may arrive factory unlocked right from the get go.

it's always been delayed, not on release date.

unless you travel alot, why would you buy an unlocked phone? i mean you're gonna need a provider and a plan anyways right, so might as well take advantage of the subsidy.

Well, for those of us with unlimited LTE data on verizon, there is a pretty large incentive to buy out of contract (full price). If I use my subsidy, I lose unlimited data (and unlimited tethering, which has been very handy on several trips we have taken recently).
