As long as you don't happen to pick up a signal from a Mexican tower along the border you won't get charged roaming. You do have to be careful though, I noticed I hit a Rogers (Canadian) tower even within Michigan once.

had that problem with T-mobile... at my house on san juan island.. nice surpise when i got my cell bill. Luckily since t-mobile has the best reps.. i told them I was in the United States and they said ok just be careful and credited me the charges which was about 400 bucks!!! Gotta love t-mobile!!

What speeds 3G are you getting? I'm in Dallas and I'm doing pretty good here with averaging abotu 6mpbs up and 1.2mbps down.

1st test
6119kbps down: 1251kbps up
2nd test
5695kbps down: 1266kbps up

What part of Dallas? Better check that again, I think you forgot to turn off your WiFi.

Just ran 3 tests (I'm in Turtle Creek)

1st test
1084kbps down 609kbps up (holding phone in my hand)
2nd test
1351kbps down 537kbps up (held part of the time, set it down after a moment)
4th test
3667kbps down 599kbps up (sitting on the back of the couch)
5th test
1329kbps down 550kbps up (couch again)

Edit: That was using Xtreme Labs Speedtest app. I downloaded SpeedTest.Net app and the upload increased by double??? Download is fairly consistent around 2Mbpps. Strange how the upload changed. Makes me thing that the upload on the server used on the first app is choked somehow.

Either way, I've NEVER seen 6Mbps down in Dallas.

Edit 2: I can't stand Rick Perry. (removed political rant...)

I'm a Texan, and Rick Perry does NOT speak for me. Just so you're aware, that we're not ALL like that.

It's all good. I was born in Texas. Spent half my life there.

I've spent the other half living in the United States. ;)

Of course, everyone has forgot to point out that AT&T's HQ is in Dallas, TX.
But seriously, if you've got a national plan and have roaming turned off, you will be fine.

edit: I'm trying to escape from Texas. The heat is trying to kill me.

Just turn off roaming and you will be fine even if you venture into some of the areas of the Texas not served by AT&T.
Even though some folks don't THINK so, it's still (almost) part of the US!
And, OT, I still love the quote from General Philip Sheridan, post Civil War military governor of Texas who said, "“If I owned Hell and Texas I would rent out Texas and live in Hell”!:D

Uhhh, why aren't you calling your service provider (AT&T) for this question instead of asking a bunch of strangers on a message board?

Of course, everyone has forgot to point out that AT&T's HQ is in Dallas, TX.

AT&T (the parent company) is HQ'd in Texas, but the subsidiary AT&T Mobility (that runs the company that we use with our iPhones) is HQ'd in Atlanta with its own CEO and board of directors.

I'm about 1 mile from downtown I guess, as the crow flies. But I knew I'd have doubters, so I took a quick screenshot of one of the tests. I used Speedtest.net. And you can see I was 3G, not wifi.

That's odd. I can go about 10 miles into Canada (Windsor) and still pick up AT&T.

I've never had any signal problems with 3G speeds traveling the I-35 corridor. I live in Dallas and drive to Okla very often and never lose coverage. Same with going back and forth to the San Marcos/New Braunfels...

Ps. Texas is the best country in this land. Born, breed and cattle fed deep in the heart of Texas!

Not quite true. By default, the iPhone OS considers 3rd party domestic partner networks to be the same thing as the native AT&T network, so turning off roaming doesn't have any effect on your ability to access them.

For voice minutes and text messages, this doesn't really matter in situations like yours, because for the amount of time you'd be likely to be off-network, you probably won't have a chance to go over the limits.

Data, on the other hand, can be a bit of a headache. The off-network limit is 24 MB per month. An iPhone can go through that quite quickly if you're not careful.

Depending on how complete AT&T's native coverage in Texas may be, you may not run into this problem at all -- the trouble is, by default there's no way for you to tell whether or not you're off-net, so it is difficult to determine whether or not you need to take precautions.

It is possible for AT&T to add a feature code to your account (not sure what it is) which will cause the iPhone's network banner to change if you ever happen to roam onto a 3rd party partner network.
