Will I never be able to restore to ios 5?

    Hey everyone,

I've been jailbreaking for a while, so I'm not really a noob. I have an iphone 4 with a semi-tethered jailbreak. Unfortunately, my iphone crashed and I had to restore. I was pissed because I ended up (involuntarily) updating to ios 5.0.1 and my baseband got raped. Now this phone is not nearly as valuable, so I basically lost $100 since this is no longer unlocked. Anyway, is there really no way to save the shsh blobs for ios 5? How are we gonna restore if we don't want to update? It's really frustrated me that Apple can tell me which firmware I can and can't use on my phone. I'm really close to just selling this **** and getting a more "hacker-friendly" phone :/. Does anyone know of a way to restore to ios5 once newer firmwares come out?

There is no way to save SHSH blobs for versions Apple isn't signing anymore. Even if you had your iOS 5.0.0 blobs, you couldn't go back. Starting with iOS 5, Apple changed the way the blobs are used so that they can only be used one time. It is currently unknown if we'll ever be able to reuse these new type of blobs.

Wow so if my phone crashes, I will never be able to go back to a jailbroken ios5 if they eventually patch the exploits and stop signing the older firmwares? man, now I really want to toss this neutered device in the garbage. I don't know how you guys put up with this ****. All I want is my sbsettings and my tweaks... Does anyone know of a good phone that isn't run by a dictatorship?

btw thank you for your fast response :) I appreciate it

Yep. But because you have the iPhone 4, you will always have a tethered jailbreak. The devices that people should be worried about are the iPad 2 and 4S. They don't have a bootrom exploit and will probably rely on a userland jailbreak for a while or always.

ah man :/. Do you think there will ever be a way to get around this? I guess my iphone 4 is ok, but I have an ipad 2 wifi version with 4.3.5 and I have been waiting so long to jailbreak it... it's been collecting dust :/ If I can't crack the ipad, I'll probably just end up selling it too.

Possibly. My guess is that the iDevice will require a bootrom exploit like limera1n. That means, no iOS 5 SHSH blob playback on the iPad 2 or 4S. But I hope I'm wrong.

Thanks intell, you have really helped me out :)

I know it's apple's device and they can do whatever they want with it, but isn't there some kind of fair-use law or something to protect us? No point in complaining anymore.... I'll just show my disapproval not by whining, but by refusing to give them my money... simple as that. I bet if everyone did this, they would undo all of this crap in an instant.

What jailbroken app are you pining for that makes an unjailbroken iPad worthless?

I'm not throwing a fit. I told you that I'm not complaining, it's their product. While I can't choose how they treat consumers, I can choose not to be a part of that ****. I just don't want to pay for a device that has less capability, runs inefficiently, is run by an app store dictatorship, and costs more. It's like buying a ****** landrover just because of the name when there is something else out there that is cheaper and gets more bang for your buck.
It makes no sense to have to go through all of these caveats of jailbreaking and hacking just to truly customize a device the way you want. For example, why on earth is there no sbsettings? Or cydgets? What about the ability to design custom scripts or the freedom to change the interface entirely? Please don't dribble your fanboism on me, because I am not trying to pick a bone here. I came for information, and now that I know what I have to do in order to attain my jailbreak in the future, I have calculated that this ipad 2 is simply not worth it. Compared to what is available, it is crippled... and also, there's just something that bothers me about not being able to use the hardware to the full extent that it was meant to be used. I want to be able to design an interface that works best for me. I don't want someone else to tell me how to use the hardware I paid for. So there you go. I hope that answers your question on why I am not willing to accept a crippled device from a totalitarian company. I still have the macbook pro, and I do actually like their higher-end computers. They are truly free to customize. I want the same experience I get on my laptop for my idevice.

Your not just buying the hardware though, your buying the software as well and you knew the limitations of what you could do with it when you purchased the phone.

Being able to jailbreak is not what you signed up for and a perk on the side of it if it is possible.

Get an Android phone if you really want to customise the hell out of a phone.

I don't have an android phone so this may be more FUD than anything else, but I read articles and blogs and a truly "open" phone is hard to come by. It's the varying degrees what you want to do vs. the number of hoops to jump through and spotty upgrades. Again, I just see comments and complaints on blogs so I might be describing 1% of the phones out there.

The only point I'm trying to (badly) make is that from what I've read a true non-neutered phone is a unicorn's cousin.

SHSH backups or not, you've never been able to downgrade your baseband.

Man, it is about the freedom man... Got to be free to hack the device man... Can't let the man control me...

Seriously though, clearly the OP is someone who likes to tinker with his toys and that is fine... the iOS ecosystem is probably not the most hospitable to that, if that is your primary concern for mobile devices, though.

No. I will continue to jailbreak and customize the hell out of my phone. Don't judge what other people do with their own hardware.

This is incorrect. They have a working untethered that's not currently public and won't be for a while. Though the 5.0.0 may be out by the end of the dec.
