My OS is 10.6.8 and am installing Mountain Lion.
I have invalid file count and invalid directory count when I verify my start up disc.
If I charge ahead and install Mountain Lion, will it repair these?
I have read that to repair it I need to reinstall OS, but that seems pointless if I'm installing a new OS.

    I would do two things,
    1. Make sure you have a current backup
    2. Repair the volume before attempting an upgrade.

Looks like your drive is having issues, and if its a hardware failure, then you risk losing your data or making matters worse with an upgrade

Note that "Repair Disk" is greyed out. You can't repair the disk if you're using it as your system volume.
You need to boot to some other volume, such as your installer disk, external drive, etc.

I've made 2 back ups and will now use my OS installer DVD to repair the disc.
