I have a mac mini on Catalina which I haven't updated to a newer OS due to possible breakage of critical apps.

Will iOS 16 support it in some fashion?

iOS = the operating system on iPhones.

Catalina = macOS Catalina (version 10.15), the sixteenth major release of macOS, Apple Inc.'s desktop operating system for Macintosh computers.

Like to elaborate what E.X.A.C.T.L.Y. you want to ask?

I am asking if iOS 16 will support MacOS Catalina. I really don't want to have to upgrade my mini just for the newest OS.

iPhones don't support Macs. They are separate devices. There is nothing your Mac needs from an iPhone. It's unclear what you're asking.

Say I would want to sync an upgraded iPhone or iPad to a mac running Catalina. Would that be possible?

I suspect the sync function in Finder will still work - for iOS 15, and macOS older than Catalina, I presume the sync still works with iTunes, given Apple's documentation doesn't state otherwise (or impose limitations).

That said, you are likely on borrowed time.

The question asked by the OP was not that unreasonable. I suspect Mountain Lion would not allow syncing between an ios device and that Mac. So the question is really where is the line drawn?
