No, see the OS4 announcement details, free for this one, pay for the next.

Thanks. The fact that it's free probably means that apple had intended to ship OS4 with the iPad but couldn't get it ready in time.

Why do only iPod touch users have to pay? Is there a reason they do this other than wanting money?

It is something about some accounting rules, that they can't give away free software upgrades. The reason they can on iPhone and iPad is because they spread the income out over some period of time.

I don't really understand it though.

No. iPhones never paid for updates.

That sucks. IIRC, 1.X with a few new apps including notes was paid too.

No, it means that they want to take the iPad in the same path of the iPhone in software updates since iPhone owners don't have to pay for OS updates.

    An iPod touch.

No need to be like that. Just answer the question and move on.:(

No not true, since you will have to pay for updated after the 4.0 update.

Let's take a look at that MacRumors post (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/03/29...gm-ipad-sdk-firmware-and-licensing-agreement/) one more time and look at the policy:

it states nothing regarding OS 5.0 and whether it will be free or a paid upgrade.

Instead of assuming it will, look at the facts.

    Get new sources, buddy!

The Reason they have to charge

The reason for the charge for iPod OS updates and not for iPhone relates to a piece of legislation called the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (deals with the collapse of Enron). It deals with when you can actually claim profits. Because iPhones are on a subscription based model, they are allowed to include the update, but the you are legally not allowed to add new features to a product which has already been paid for (not monthly subscription based) like the iPod touch, without charging for those features. See this engadget article for more detail.

UPDATE: And I forgot, as previously posted, Apple has said we get OS 4.0 for free.

Plenty of free firmware/software updates provide new features.

    No, but we should.

We bought the device as is. Expecting upgrades for free is just silly.

4.0 Would be a free upgrade because its a tick on the tick tock cycle. OS 3.0 didn't really add major new features like 4.0 is and Apple wants to be sure you can buy the applications.

I can see iPad owners in the future having to pay for 5.0

    Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3GS: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.4 Mobile/7D11 Safari/531.21.10)

I always thought it had something to do with the iPhone being on a cell phone plan. So I would think iPad without the 3G data plan would be similar to iPod touch.

Thanks for the link. I really wouldn't complain anymore than I would for a Mac OS upgrade. So, I'll just accept 4.0 (for my iPad that is) and be prepared to pay after that ;)

Are you serious? I have a PS3 that upgrades for free all the time. I have an Xbox 360 that does the same. My Zune? Free upgrades. Service Packs for Windows are always free. PC games are always patched after release. There's a ton of examples that could be used. There's nothing "silly" about expecting an upgrade.

No "we" didn't buy the device as is.

The unseasoned Apple purchasers among us may have bought it as is, but most others here buy Apple because we know that Apple supports their products for years with upgrades.

It is one of the main reasons I have Macbooks, iPod Touches, iPhones, and iPads.
