Will iPhone 2G still function after cell service cancelled?

I have an iPhone 2G with service through AT&T, long out of contract... my question is, if I cancel my cellular service with them, will the device still function as an iPod, be able to access the internet via wifi, etc? Obviously, I know I won't have phone or cellular data access, but will the other non-AT&T related functions still work? Any feedback is appreciated, thanks.
