you mean if you buy 3rd party and not from apple?
Two ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB [Add $250.00]
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB [Add $200.00}

So if you go via apple, it's 50$ cheaper to get 5870, and use 50$ towards gt120.

Otherwise you can get MP with one 5770. then purchase 2 PC 5770s, flash them and then sell 5770. But tbh that seems like a hassle to somebody who hasnt flashed nor likes dealing with selling on ebay, compared to sticking one gt120.
Although 3rd party 2x5770s will consume less power than 5870 and gt120 and might even produce less noise.

Yes go 3rd party, like Sapphire or HIS. I will never buy an apple branded gpu as you can get the pc card for half the price.

In the end, it's up to you. What do you want to do? Single 5870, crossfire 5770/5830s?

Your option makes sense if you already have a MacPro...upgrading cards from Apple is too costly and doesnt make sense really if you can flash PC cards.

Im going to order a new 2010 MP, so getting it with 5870 (gaming) + gt 120 (extra monitors) makes more sense since it will cost the same as selling the 5770, that it will come with, and then buying 2x5770s and flashing them.

When the time comes to update the cards, Ill definitely go the PC cards + flashing route though.

CrossFire does not require motherboard support like NVIDIA's SLI mode.

I've successfully used CrossFire jumpers on both Mac and PC GPUs and combinations of both under Windows (Boot Camp) on 2008 and 2009 Mac Pros.

As long as the 5770 has the CrossFire blade connector exposed, a pair should be able to be jumpered. I will soon have two of them in our lab and will be giving it a try. I already have the jumper cable. (You can order it from ATI or other sources.)

You actually don't need a jumper as the cards communicate on the PCX bus. My MP 2010 does not have the bridge but they are running in Crossfire mode (At least what the driver tells me :)

Awesome I actually opted for 5870+gt120 solution, but am curious how mac version of 5870 would stack up against CFed 5770s
