Hello

I own a MacMini M1 which I use with a Dell 32" 4K display. I have one big frustration though, as I can't run the display at 3008x1692 via HDMI. I have to use a USB-C (port) and a DisplayPort cable.

So my question:
Will the new Mac Mini M2 run the display at 3008x1692 via HDMI?

You have to use both simultaneously?
No, I did not say that. I can't run that resolution (3008x1692) via HDMI, only when using a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.

What I need to know is, if a MacMini M2 can do it via HDMI.

Are you using a "Ultra High Speed HDMI" cable that is certified?
Sounds like its your HDMI limiting your display as your other connection options work.

That doens't matter on the M1 MacMini - it can't do it via HDMI.

What I need to know is, if I will solve this issue by upgrading to the M2 MacMini (with a newer HDMI version).

Have you tried BetterDisplay?

Can't imagine that would be any different on the M2.

But have you tried the following trick on your M1:

While adequate for the majority of users, these five resolution choices (default and scaled) are missing several “in-between” display options, as well as “low resolution” modes, such as a true 2560×1440 that must be upscaled by the monitor and may be necessary for testing or software compatibility purposes.

Thankfully, these resolutions are still accessible, and here’s how to access them.

  1. Press and hold the Option key on your keyboard, and then click the Scaled option again.

Since it is a never HDMI version I thought it could be the case.

Anyone here with an actual M2 MacMini + a 4K display?
Sorry, late reply but no - it doesn't work on my M2 Mac mini.

I just ordered a Thunderbolt 3 to HDMI adapter - will post back here if that works.

I have an LG Ultrafine 4k HDR display and it came with a USB-C/TB3 in the box. On an M2 Mac Mini. Have never tried HDMI. I have no other peripherals and have my ext hard drive and webcam plugged in to the back of the monitor. No issues whatsoever.

Running at
3840 x 2160 (2160p/4K UHD 1 - Ultra High Definition)

So 3008x1692 (HiDPI; 6016x3384 rendering, and scaled down) works great using a TB3-HDMI cable, but doesn't work when using the HDMI port. Base model (16/512) M2 Mini here.

My opinion on this subject has been that HDMI was not really designed for optimal use with monitors as it is better as a media connection for televisions and audio systems. By far and away the specifications able to be achieved via Display Port is far superior, especially if you wish to run multiple monitors from a MacMini. I wouldn't waste my time with HDMI from a Thunderbolt or DP capable device such as the Mini. I don't answer your question directly as I don't have the M2 model, I just don't understand why you would want to use the HDMI connection, DP / USB-C is far superior.
