Will Mail receive mail when it's closed?

When I have the mail application closed can it still receive mail, and show it in the dock?

if theirs a little black arrow below it its checking your mail, if not then no mail

I have it set to check mail once a minute so would if I close it will it open every minute and check mail?

it wont open automatically. close mail with the red X in the upper left, but dont quit the application. make sure the little black arrow is still there. mail doesnt have to be on the screen, the windows can be closed but not quit. hope that helps
