will mpbs get "pro" graphics cards in next update?
whats a mpbs? im assuming you're not talking about a mega bit per second...

....look at all they managed to fit into the macbook air.

like what? i think you mean look at what they've managed to cram into the mbp's over the past two years, the Macbook air is very disappointing compared to that, seriously an 80gb 4200rpm harddrisk? 2gb ram max? no optical drive, only 1 usb port, no ethernet...and you think its impressive?

i mean just the fact they managed to make such a small machine....not saying i'd ever buy one. but good point though.

what about the 9600 which is released in february? Wouldnt apple want the latest if they dont update that often?

The mobile 9xxx version is nothing more than DX 10.1 complaint cards from nVidia, with some die shrinks. It's nothing really new, just like how the HD 3xxx series from ATi isn't quite "new."

I was wondering...

Thinking about graphics updates... I was thinking if an upgraded 8700 would match close to the power of a 7800GTX (to run Crysis at recommended specs), with a MBP bootcamping Vista. Any ideas if this is a dream or reality?

you mean PRO = gaming capability?

i'm positively sure that they will not put the most hardcore (in terms of game performance) GPU in the macbook pro. It's not a gaming laptop. I like my 3:30 to 4 hour battery life, thank you.

Why does everyone assume graphics capability is about games?
You want games? Buy a PlayStation!

There are a lot of graphics pros, of which I'm one, who need good quality 3D capability in laptops to earn our living.

Mac used to be the best and I so, SO hope they don't lose it further because right now they are merely starting to look like the prettiest, which is cool but bot not crucial.
I don't want to have to start all over from scratch after all these years on a PC because that's what I have to have to run the programs I need.
I just don't.

what are you going to do with a "pro" video card? play EA's Harry potter?

BTW a pro video card is an 8800GTX 512MB or better (SLI?)
an OK midrange is 8600GT 512MB
a low-mid range is 8600GS 256MB
a garbage card is an 8400 128MB (ment for ultra portables that dont play games)

non exsistant card is intel extreme graphics

8400mGT is not a garbage card.

no reason not to stick the 8800 in there.....aleinware already has in their 15.4..or at least a 512 8700. i'm hoping they go a 512 for the highend and a 256 for the low end....cause the 8600 barely passes for a pro graphics card.

do u think they'll upgrade them? ..the reason i ask is i do not think they have historically always upgraded the graphics card every update.

8800 is not a 'pro' card.

I prefer they put in something like a Quadro or a FireGL, that is a pro card.

i've always thought the Nvidia Quadro, not the GeForce series was tailored to professionals.

i was referring to the fact that the OP wanted the GeForce series GPUs, and the fact that he mentioned "Alienware".

When you order workstations from Dell they have a tendency to package Quadros for sure. The Geforce always came off to me as consumer class cards.

17" should defo include a 512mb maaan! :(

Whatever the model....it runs cooler than the 15". Ive mentioned on a previous post before i saw this one. Why no include a 512mb 8800 thats got an HDMI output (alienwares got it on a 15.4") in the 17"! Ok sacrifice abit of battery life....but its a 17" more desktop. IF you want mobile go for the 15.4 :p

They overclock the 17" 8600 anyway....

Orrrrr...how about underclock the 8800 then to satisfy everyone?

If your living really depends on it, then you should be able to scrounge up enough money for a Mac Pro. I don't see any professional film editors running around saying they can't make a living because they can't run avid on their laptop. Just get a desktop if you need that much power.

The 8600m GT was the best card available when apple put it in the current generation of MBPs. There was a few faster cards, but noone of them would have fit in the MBP.

If there will be a new MBP revision in jan 08 they will probably have the 8700m which is only slightly faster than the 8600m. The 8800m will just not fit.

And put it on wheels?
Needs to be portable.
And I'm not a film editor and don't have money to burn.

I think that apple will wait for new Nvidia generation. The Nvidia 9600 is slowly appearing now for desktops, maybe nvidia will do the mobile chip soon after?

Yup, probably right.

I feel that next update MBP will contain 9600m GT or so, at 128/256MB VRAM to 512 VRAM.

You have no idea about Apple did underclock 8600m GT? I don't think that Apple will goes to 8700m GT due more heat and probably not fit.

4 bags of scooby snacks says apple will indeed opt for the 8800 option....look at all they managed to fit into the macbook air.

What was it that they managed to fit into the Macbook Air? Oh, that's right. A whole lot less.

No a "pro" video card would be a NVIDIA Quadro FX 3600M.

how come it needs to be portable? wouldn't your client provide you with a computer at their place, if you're working at their offices?

mac pro standard (4 core) is cheaper than mid-range mbp.

so i don't understand why you can't get a macpro? mbp are good. for designers, but, for video editors and 3d animators it's the mac pro. when you're doing a job you're usually sitting on a desk am i right?

There's a lot of crazy replies in this thread.

Frankly, the 8600 is already too hot as its underclocked in the 15" model. Yet some people think they'll put in the OVERclocked 8700 which is hotter. Heh or even the more powerful 8800..
