will one 4gb ram work with the 2+2?

based on crucial.com, it's ok to add just one 4gb to one of the 2 open slots to get a total 8gb. any opinions?

i got the 4gb for $39 last week (less then crucial.com itself at $48). it goes up and down from 39 to 52. no savings on it going for 8gb at once (unless you get two 4gb).

right now it's 51 for 4gb & 118 for 8gb (2 x 4). for a month now, 4gb alone x 2 has always been less then 8gb. for that reason, one 4gb was enough for now.
