Will restoring my iPhone avoid data charges (un-jailbreaking it)?

So, I have an iPhone that has been jailbroken for some time now. I was on T-Mobile, which is why I had it jailbroken/unlocked in the 1st place. Well, I moved to the middle of nowhere and was forced to switch to AT&T for coverage. I don't mind AT&T too much, and now I've gotten used to using the Data plan for e-mail, weather, urbanspoon, and lots of other apps.

Now, I'm an "add a line" customer on a friend's plan... He called me yesterday and told me to STOP using any and all data because he's being charged by the minute. AT&T says that this is because my phone is jailbroken.

So, here's my question: If I plug my iphone into my Mac (which I know from experience) and it "un-jailbreaks" it (so to speak), will my data usage be covered on my friend's plan?

I've been wanting to update the firmware anyway, but I knew that this would do away with all my super cool free apps I've gotten, the themes, etc. Now, knowing that I can't check my e-mail without being charged is enough of an incentive to restore/upgrade firmware and undo the jailbreaking. However, I want to be SURE that doing this will provide me with access to the unlimited data which I should be entitled to.... I will be PISSED if I undo all my cool mods and then the data still isn't covered. Please help!

Jailbroken phones are fine on AT&T. Did you sign up for a data plan when he added the line? If not, unjailbreaking will not do anything for you and he'll still be charged.

You are being charged for the data because you don't have a data plan, not because your phone is jailbroken. You need to get the $30 unlimited data plan for your iPhone.

Yes either add the $30 data plan or block data and only use the internet on wifi.

He already had the line added WITH DATA, before I put the sim in my iPhone. We even had to call and give them my IMEI number (I think that's what it's called..) because they said without it, they would to continue to bill by the minute for data. So we thought we were out of the woods... Now when the bill came through on the 15th, it seems we're still being charged for data, so he called again, and they told him we were being charged bc my phone is jailbroken/unlocked. This, and my aforementioned post is all I know.

Let's try not to focus on the $30 data plan issue.... what I need to know is
    a) does anyone else have a jailbroken phone that works fine with AT&T's unlimited data plan and
    b) should I have to restore/un-jailbreak to get the unlimited data coverage which I am already paying for?

No jb has nothing to do with it. Something is screwed up with their billing on your account. You're not supposed to be getting charged double. Once for unlimited data and again per kb used.
Call again and hopefully you get a good rep that can fix it. They can't even tell if an iPhone is jailbroken.
What they told your friend is nonsense.

Let's try to focus on the Multiquote feature of the message board, no need for 4 individual reponses. :)

    a) I have been jailbroken since a month after jailbreaks came out. Not once has my bill had any issues, that's with 5 total jailbroken iPhones.
    b) AT&T cannot tell if your iPhone is jailbroken or not. I suspect they messed up the IMEI in their billing and it's not on the proper plan. If you don't trust this thought process, just restore your iPhone to default, and test for a week or 2, then call up and ask what is on your data bill. if you still have charges, it's AT&T's fault.

Why not sit down with your friend and log onto the AT&T account.

For each number, it will show what type of phone is being used and what features are enabled for each number.

Sounds like a 2 minute fix.

haha on the Mutiquote comment... I was reiterating for emphasis.

I'm going to call AT&T... if that doesn't work, I'll restore phone to defaults in a few days.

Maybe my friend is LYING to me... LOL.

I'm in Miami and he's in North Alabama. When we are in the same state, it's like pulling teeth to get in touch with him. EXCEPT when he feels the need to tell me about the overages on the bill. Ha! Anywho.. I will try to do this via phone today as well as calling AT&T to make sure they have the right IMEI's.

    Thanks for everyone's help!
