What do you guys think? Especially for reminders or searching contacts/making calls and other tasks that don't require you to be connected to the internet.

There's no real reason why they can't do it. I expect we'll see it in either iOS 9 or 10, hopefully the former.

Storing a huge amount of recognition data is sometimes a pain for 16 GB user. Well, it's great to see Siri can go offline, but I think apple, no, even Microsoft will not let that happen, easily.

Probably not. As much as I would like it. All the processing of the voice input goes on at Apple's servers. As powerful as a phone may be it can't store all the data needed to properly ID complicated voice commands. I thought Google might be ahead of Siri on this one but it seems the same, only works online for the most part.

there is every reason why this will never happen.

- processing power
- data storage
- data algorithms are being updated 24/7 so updates to your localized database are needed

and, on the other hand:
- the speed of the internet connection is increasing so dramatically that there is absolutely no need for a localized processor capability.

Rubbish. The voice recognition on iPhone that was there before Siri did all the things that the OP said, and that was 5 years ago.

Currently, if there's no data connection Siri is completely useless. There's no reason why it can't do minor offline tasks when there's no connection to the servers.

Yep. When Siri is disabled in restriction, voice control will show up when long pressing the home button.

Unfortunately, if you didn't disable Siri in restriction, or simply turn it off, you will not be able to use viol control for now.

Aah yeah I'd forgotten that you can just turn Siri off and it will default to the standard (offline) voice control.

That's one solution I suppose, but it's far from convenient.

Do any of these types of services work offline? I don't think google now or cortana work unless you're online.

I have a sense that all those companies want you to use their features, online, as much as possible. Whether you are an American, Chinese, or citizen in other countries.

I don't know if voice control will be taken away from iOS silently. I just want to use my device as smooth as possible.

At least cortana in Windows preview will not work if you go offline.

There are two reasons, they don't want the competition reverse engineering their solutions and they want access to want you are telling it for what-ever purpose.

When you disable Siri and have no data connection, you still get Voice Control which can do basic things like play songs, skip tracks and call people. Therefore there is already basic local voice processing on the phone.

I would like to see:

a) these existing offline Voice Control commands available for Siri when there is no data. This seems like a no brainer.

b) the offline commands extended to include some extra Siri commands- ones that aren't too complex, don't require feedback and don't don't need data to be performed. For example 'Open x' and 'Disable/enable x'.

Will Siri ever work offline?

Nope. That's why voice control exists. I really have never ran into this problem, as I'm always connected to the internet via wifi or cellular.

At least Siri should switch to Voicd Control automatically then if it's not available. I've ran into issues with Siri telling me it's not available even with me having a perfectly working data connection.

I HATE that there isn't an offline mode. I drive a lot for work and regularly find myself in data blackspots. I'll have cellular signal, but no internet. My iPhone is docked in my car and I always use "Hey Siri, call whats-his-face". Slightly annoying when she comes back saying she's unavailable :-/

Sense most people are always online I don't think the cons out weigh the pro.

Honesty I only once seen the Siri not available thing and I was on a road trip in the middle of no where.

Temporary solution :
Jailbreak then install "Assistant Unrestrictor".
