I have had an AW series 0 for about 2 years. The face is very scratched up. I only ever take it off for shower and sleep. Will I benefit from the SS version with the sapphire crystal front? Is it really as scratch resistant as everyone says?

I’m wondering if I am better off just getting a regular non stainless model and replacing every 2 years.

The sapphire display on the stainless Apple Watch is highly scratch resistant. As somebody who owns multiple Apple Watches in the stainless version, I have no scratches on the display whatsoever. If you're somebody that doesn't like to look at scratches, then I would recommend the stainless model if you can justify the price point.

However, as a cheaper alternative, if you decide to purchase the sports aluminum model, then I would suggest a screen protector to help protect against scratches if you don't want to spend extra money on the stainless model.

Wore my SS series 0 2.5 yrs. The screen and case were perfect when I sold it. The micro scratches that accumulate on the SS case can be polished out. Go stainless if you can afford it.

The sapphire display and more resilant case is the reason I’ll only buy the SS model. With the s0 I started with the sport and quickly realized the errors in my ways with scratches on it in days. Decided I needed to get the SS and did so, kept it for two years and just replaced it with an s3 SS. I’m hard on my watches, the SS model is a tank.

I shoot competitively. Have a S3SBSS and S2SS. The S2SS I've accidentally shot my pistol while rubbing it against an outdoor prop wall with rusty steel frames. Kicked myself the couple times I've done. Left rusty metallic residue on the watch face, which wiped off promptly with spit. Watch face completely unaffected. Not a single noticeable mark and I am the most anal about these things you would find. The SS watch body has many fine character scratches though, which I may polish out some day with a cape cod cloth. Go for it!

Sapphire crystals ARE more shatter prone though, so don't drop it on a hard surface.

I think there is one aspect of the stainless watches that is under represented and that is the esthetics. As I’ve stated before, I look at the watch all day long and am delighted I went for the stainless. The durability is secondary to me. I don’t care about resale value.

I was sitting in a restaurant the other day with brick walls. I accidentally grazed my watch face along the bricks and not a single scratch. This was my SS Series 3.

This is a great post of a real world scenario with the Watch. Because it shows you the durability of sapphire compared to the ion-X Glass. If you had been wearing the sport model and your wrist would have hit the brick wall with the display, I guarantee it would Have scratched it easily.

But because of the Sapphire display, It didn't have any marks whatsoever. And that is exactly why I chose the stainless model strictly because of the Sapphire display and its protection.

I did exactly that. It just added to my other array of scratches on my non stainless model.

Actually, the black stainless steel is less prone to scratches. It has a diamond like coating on it which makes it very durable. I’ve had mine for nearly a year, wear it every day, not a mark anywhere. I’m very happy with it.

black stainless has the DLC coating that makes it very, very hard to scratch. many people report that after a year or two the black stainless body is still flawless or has less than 1 or 2 microfine scratches that can only been seen in light and have no depth and are nearly invisible. if for some reason it did truly become gouged there isn't a way to polish it however, but i honestly have never seen anyone report anything like that it is so strong.

the regular stainless steel will get scuffs and marks before the end of your first DAY however within a month or so it forms a nice patina that adds to the character AND looks normal and nice for stainless in my opinion. that said a cheap shining cloth for stainless can every few months be used to remove 90-95% of the marks and return the watch to nearly new condition although of course almost immediately it will start getting new ones.

both stainless but very, very different properties. both are beautiful and a huge, huge upgrade from aluminum.

PS: I agree with what everyone says about sapphire, its miracle stuff. i abused the heck out of my watches with sapphire (Apple Watch series 0, garmin fenix) and both look like the day I bought them after smashing the screens into metal corners and brick. I am moving back to AW for 2018 (I'm crazy, I bought myself a SBSS AW3 that is sitting here but have decided to wait until 1/1/18 to open it) and you bet I wanted sapphire again.

Don’t agree SS scratches as quickly as you suggest. I have been wearing my SS S3 for a month and can’t find any visible scratches. My SS S0 did accumulate micro scratches which I could buff out. I agree it is possible to scratch it the first day.

The space black stainless steel Apple Watch uses a diamond like carbon coating that has a protective layer over the space black color. The space black Apple Watch is almost impervious to scratches and holds up very well.

My Aluminum sport didn’t last a few days till it was scratched. Sold it and now have the SS SB S3 and not one mark. I’m in property maintenance plus Fire & Rescue. My Phone & watch doesn’t have a good life lol. Couldn’t be happier with my new watch.
