Ternus wants to make the AppleTV streaming service more competitive. But what does that mean? It could mean branching out into more types of shows like weekly news, sketch comedy, procedural medical and crime shows, monster of the week shows, cartoons, etc. It could mean bigger budget movies that are Hollywood summer blockbusters. Or it could mean ads?

Now no one likes ads, but they do keep the cost of these services down. Netflix started streaming at $7.99 a month in 2011 and is now just $8.99 a month in 2026. That's incredible. The addition of ads has almost completely neutralized price increased for 15 years. Meanwhile, AppleTV started at $4.99 in 2019 and is now $12.99. That's a 160% increase in 6 years. It's unsustainable.

So what do you all think? Will Ternus bring ads to the platform to reduce the cost and gain more subscribers? Or will it continue to be an ad-free premium experience that outprices Netflix and other streaming platforms?

Apple TV already has ads. Just because they are for Apple TV shows, doesn't mean they aren't ads.

As for ads that you mean, I don't think it'll happen any time soon, unless the price is a lot less than the current. It's already a third-banana service, and ads won't help that. I don't think price is the problem.

For the quality of shows available, Apple TV is definitely underpriced.

I could see ad-supported at the current price, and maybe a new Apple TV Ultra tier for those who want award-winning shows without any advertising.

Netflix is $8.99 for ad-supported, or $19.99 without ads.

It's certainly possible Apple TV will end up with ad-supported and "Premium" options - I think they're trying to keep it all "Premium" for the time being. But yeah, if the cost ends up having to go much higher than $12.99/mo, probably they'll have to offer both alternatives.

I don't think we will see ads any time soon. I think the biggest weakness that I hope Ternus focuses on is building a quality catalog of movies and tv shows from various yers and genres. In my opinion, the Apple TV library is sorely lacking if it ever wants to be competitive.

Coming attractions are not PSA? You call them ads?
