Apple does not offer an external USB trackpad, only a Magic Trackpad that connects via Bluetooth.

I would think so. My BT keyboard wakes my MacBook when in clamshell.

Yes, the trackpad will wake up a sleeping Mbp in clamshell mode. Assuming its been paired with the MBP.
