Will the bands be compatible with the next gen?

I don't see why they wouldn't be. I really want to buy a leather band for my space grey sport but I would be happier with the purchase if I knew I could use both bands with the next generation of apple watch.

Leather watch bands worn in contact with skin and sweat every day for a year (or two) and cracking at the places where they are bent every day, are not going to be very appealing for your new shiny 2nd or 3rd generation watch, especially when there will be many, many appealing bands you never even imagined.

Just buy what you want now and enjoy it. My leather belts and shoes all wear out and I replace them.

Consider checking eBay. I didn't look real carefully but it looked like there were some pretty nice options for the leather bands at very reasonable prices.
