The Pro Display XDR has about 20 million pixels at 10-bit colour. A 5K display has about 30 million pixels. The 15" Touch Bar-era MacBook Pros all support up to two external 5K displays at 10-bit colour in addition to its internal display, so I would bet they can support at least one Pro Display XDR.

I'm fairly certain that a 5K display has ~15 million pixels, not 30 million. However, your point is still sound.

We won't know for certain until the product comes out or Apple lists support, but the only thing that you linked to that invites questions is the lack of the 6K display being listed in the MBP tech specs. I suspect that Apple simply hasn't updated its product pages for an unreleased product (and there are no other 6K displays on the market, to my knowledge). If the base Mac Pro can make full use of the display with a 580, then at least the Vega-equipped MBPs should be able to drive this, if not the 555- and 560-equipped models.

It's clear that this display is pushing the limits of TB 3. There is so little bandwidth left over after driving the panel that the USB ports on the monitor run only at USB 2 speeds!

During the keynote, apple said mbp can drive 2 of these displays. The question of how smooth the experience will be remains to be seen. I'm going to wait for reviews before buying this bad boy. I'm going to game on this as well as some colour work.

Majority of previews say picture quality is on par w/ oled displays while some others say it doesn't look as good as oled counterparts but comes real close. I have to see it w/ my own eyes.

I'm putting aside some money for this if I decide to buy it; the display + stand + nano-texture option will cost me a grand total of 10.5g after tax in Canadian dollars. Man, I've never spent this kind of money on a monitor before but I believe in apple quality. They always push the boundaries and want to be the leader in everything that they do - iphone, ipad, watch, mbp, mba, mp and now the display.

Does it? It comes with an 87 watt charger.

Certainly, but if you buy a 100 Watt charger it will charge at 100 Watt. Charges quite splendidly I might add. I have two such chargers along with a USB-C battery that outputs 100W as well.

That's interesting. How did you measure the power draw?

I also wonder why Apple wouldn't use a 100W charger out of the box...

It charges faster and it says 100W in System Profiler. Also except the latest models, the 100W adapter isn't really need. If Apple were to sell their own 100W charger, they would need to design one which isn't likely to be main priority for them. Even the iPhone still comes with a 5W charger when it can support USB-PD which they only just released.

Anyways sounds like you don't believe me, so I'll just go ahead and say I'm not going out of my way to validate it for you and frankly if you can't take my word for it, I don't care. ;)

I believe you and I wasn't trying to imply otherwise. I just find it genuinely interesting that Apple chose a very specific wattage for the 15" power adapter (87W, not 85W, not 90W!) and had always assumed that this was the max power that was needed and the max power that the MBP 15" would support.

I was also wondering if e.g. you had hooked up to a Kill A Watt meter or something, which is something that I have and something that I'll probably do for fun if/when I pick up a 2019 MBP.

Cheers.
