Live in MN and this week we had -27C of real temp (not taking wind chill into consideration). I left my office and my iphone 5 had 68% battery. Once I got to my car outside in less than 2 minutes I saw a "low batt sign" on the iphone screen and it was now showing only 15% battery. The phone was very cold. By the time I got home and left the phone inside the battery went back to around 55% pretty fast. On the same day my wife got home and said the ipod we leave connected in the car was dead. It is plugged all the time so battery should not be an issue but I took it inside and it was back after couple minutes of being in a warm enrvironment.

You do need to be careful about condensation when a device goes from extreme cold to warm.

Just out of curiosity, where are you now? -40C of real temperature is brutal.

The St-Lawrence river region has been pretty cold this week in the -20,-30 or so. In Northern Ontario I've heard it's -45 before the windchill, there cellphones still work.

I know this is a really old thread, but...

I've had my iPhone 5 for just over a year. It's now winter again here in PA, with temps in the 20ºF range and colder. I had a problem last winter while I was using my iPhone at the scene of a car accident. After about 10-15 minutes outside in the cold temps, it completely lost service. I thought an AT&T tower was down, but nope... My iPhone 5 will NOT keep signal when it's freezing outside. This is the first iPhone I've had that won't work in these cold temps.

I'm using a Net10 SIM card that is cut down to nano-SIM size. I thought this might be causing an issue, since the edges of the SIM's contacts are touching the SIM tray. I added slivers of electrical tape to the tray hoping it might help. I'm wondering if this could be causing the problem with the loss of signal.

Has anyone else had this problem with an iPhone 5? I can't seem to find any complaints about "NO SERVICE" in very cold temperatures.

Yes. I own an ipod touch 4, an iphone 5c and iPod nano 7. I live in arizona where it is pretty warm (where i live it gets only too 30 degrees farenhieght. But when i go to northern arizona (at least 5 times a year)where it snows alot, i always keep mi idevices in a leather belt case so they stat insulated or i keep them in a cinching sunglasses microfiber cloth bag to keep it warm. One year i didnt do that and my idevices all died overnight in the 12 degree whether when thay were all fully charged. The cold is terrible on battery and will decrease its lifespan drastically if u dont protect them.

I put my 5s in the inside my coat pocket then run the EarPod wire through a little hole next to the zipper I made.

You guys think it will be alright to take my 5s snowboarding with me for 8 hours? Its going to be around 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

I'm not talking about battery life...

It completely losses cellular signal. Everything else works fine, but it drops to NO SERVICE.

I have a 3gs which I now use only and an iPod - stays in my car to play music. I live in Maine.

When I have left it in the car overnight (outside) and it is < 15F or so when I get in the car the phone has a message saying that the phone is TOO HOT and it must be cooled down befor using. Obviously, there is only one out of temp range message in the system and not designed for cold - just hot. I laugh when I read it.
I bring the phone in now when not in use in case but it was funny saying it was too hot when it was 0.

Last year I accidentally left my iPhone outside on my front porch and it was still fine. It got all the way down to -25 F and when you include wind chill it was -37 F. When I went to find it the next morning it was fine. Granted it did have a otter box defender on it so it did have some protection but it still functioned properly.

yes

Why don't you get a "Salt Cases" cover? Their case are thermally protective for cold and heat. Unfortunately, they only make em for Apple products at this time.

The temperatures they are talking about are crazy

It's about 7c to 12c in uk at moment and last year one day we had -12c and my legs went numb walking around town for 10mins

So -20 to -30 before windchill is insane. Forget the iPhone, get me warm

Cold weather kills battery. I used iPhone 5 in -12 C. It had 18% battery then suddenly the battery dropped to 0%. When I was back to 2 C, iPhone worked again at around 18% battery.
